“A Hopeless Addict,” Says Closing Statement On Day 15 Of Johnny Depp’s Libel Trial

Depp’s team is expected to provide their closing statement on Tuesday.

On July 27, day 15 of the Johnny Depp’s libel trial, NGN’s lawyer, Sasha Wass took the stage to deliver an explosive closing statement accusing the actor of being abusive.

In the biggest and most explosive libel trial of the 21st century, Johnny Depp is suing the publisher of the Sun, News Group Newspapers and the executive editor of the Sun fo labelling him a “wife-beater” in a 2018 article. The newspaper relies on 14 allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife, Amber Heard between 2013 -2016.

Over the past three weeks both Depp and Heard have taken the stand and provided the court the graphic inside details of their rather volatile relationship. The court also heard supporting testimonies from 25 other witnesses.

Sasha Wass told the court that their accusation relies on “overwhelming evidence of domestic violence or wife-beating behaviour, cataloged over a three-year period.”

“A hopeless addict who repeatedly lost his self-control and all ability to restrain his anger.” Said Wass

“Mr Depp’s response is to claim that he is a victim of an elaborate hoax that has been perpetrated against him by Ms Heard and her friends.” She told the court adding that Heard’s reason for the “elaborate hoax” remained “unexplained”

The court also heard on day 15 on Johnny Depp’s libel trial that it was Depp who reversed roles every time he was accused of something. ” ‘The approach taken by Mr Depp from the time Ms Heard obtained a domestic violence restraining order against him on May 27 2016 was as follows: to deny that he ever assaulted Ms Heard, to accuse Ms Heard of being the violent party and to reverse his role with hers.”

She also brought forth once more the matter of his texts regarding women where Depp used extremely crass language and then claimed to be a “Southern gentlemen who had respect for women”. She called it all untrue and deeply ” misogynistic”

“There is no doubt that Mr. Depp regularly and systematically abused his wife,” said Wass “The characterization that he is a wife beater is entirely truthful.”

“Domestic violence, as the name suggests, takes place behind closed doors, in the home, in private, and it takes place against the backdrop of a complex relationship.” Said Wass on day 15 of Johnny Depp’s libel trial directly referring to Depp’s argument that no one had seen him assault Heard. Depp himself was not present in court on Monday.

“Far from treating women with respect, the evidence, in this case, demonstrates a deep misogyny which lay at the root of Mr Depp’s anger and the anger that Mr Depp felt towards Ms Heard, which translated into violence when he felt threatened by her,” Wass told the court

The trial that has seen the former spouses go head to head with each other is expected to end on Tuesday with a closing statement from Depp’s team. However, Judge Andrew Nicol’s ruling is not expected to be heard for several weeks.
