After a five-plus-year hiatus, Adele announced she’ll be dropping new album later this month, named 30.
The 33-year-old pop superstar has given separate interviews to Vogue’s British and American editions where she spoke about the release of her highly anticipated fourth album.
The album named 30 has a meaning behind it. It is the age at which she married her long-term partner Simon Konecki, and then left him.
“My entire life fell apart and I had no warning of it,” said the singer, acknowledging that she had “bit off a grenade” and threw it into her marriage.
On Tuesday, she released a short snippet of her forthcoming single, titled Easy On Me, which will be released in full on Friday, 15 October.
Explaining the lyrics, in which she sings “Go easy on me…”, Adele said: “It’s not like anyone’s having a go at me, but it’s like, I left the marriage. Be kind to me as well.
“It was the first song I wrote for the album and then I didn’t write anything else for six months after because I was like, ‘OK, well, I’ve said it all.”
According to Vogue, lyrics in the chorus include: “Go easy on me baby / I was still a child / Didn’t get the chance to / Feel the world around me.”
30 became a medium for Adele to answer big questions about life and her break-up to her son, Angelo, she told Vogue. She also held herself accountable while writing it. “I realized that I was the problem,” she told the magazine. “Cause all the other albums are like, You did this! You did that! F*** you! Why can’t you arrive for me? Then I was like: Oh, shit, I’m the running theme, actually. Maybe it’s me!”
However, Adele doesn’t really consider the work to be a “divorce album.” “It was more me divorcing myself,” she explained. She also told Vogue UK that the record is about “self-destruction” but also “self-reflection and then sort of self-redemption.”
Adele’s new album 30 seems to be huge as she has been hinting that she’s gearing up for a new era.
Across various landmarks, Adele’s number 30 projections have been spotted. The songstress is famous for naming her albums after her ages—like 19, 21, and 25—so fans were quick to assume she was behind the marketing stunt.
On Saturday, Adele also jumped onto Instagram Live and played a clip from her single that’s scheduled to be released next week.
“There ain’t no good in this river that I’ve been washing my hands in forever / And there is hope in these waters, but I can’t bring myself to swim when I am drowning,” she sang.
