Anne Hathaway reveals that she wants to be called anything but Anne

Anne Hathaway who was born as Anne Jacqueline Hathaway, 38 recently appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and opened up about how being called by her own name gives her anxiety.

During the episode, she requested everyone to call her anything but Anne. She said, “Call me Annie– everybody, everybody, call me Annie, please. It’s…can we talk about my name for a second?”

Anne Hathaway’s name has a historic significance behind it. The first famous Anne Hathaway is said to be the wife of legendary English playwright William Shakespeare. She was born in Stratford-upon- Avon, England.

“The Witches” actress then disclosed the entire story behind her name. She said, “Let’s spill the tea. When I was 14 years old, I did a commercial and I had to get my SAG (Screen actors Guild) card and they asked me, ‘What do you want your name to be?”

The Devil Wears Prada star also revealed that no one calls her Anne among her family and friends, except her mother who calls her by that name when she is utterly mad at the actress. She says, “The only person who calls me Anne is my mother and she does it when she’s really mad at me. So every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.” She further added, “People are like, ‘Anne! And I’m like What? What did I do?”

The Oscar-winning actress appreciates all her costars who have given her nicknames over the years. “People are so lovely, they don’t want to be presumptuous, and so I think they come up with workarounds on set because the truth is nobody’s comfortable calling me Anne ever. It doesn’t fit. I’m an Annie”
