After 27 years of marriage, Bill Gates and Melinda Gates have filed for divorce. The couple shared a joint statement on social media, informing of their parting. “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life,” the statement read.
The divorce proceedings
According to Melinda’s petition for divorce filed in King County, Washington, the couple does not have a prenuptial agreement. However, the billionaires, who are co-founders of one of the world’s largest private charitable foundations, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, plan to divide their assets according to a separation agreement.
Melinda said in the petition that “spousal support is not needed.” The document also states that the marriage between Bill, 65, and Melinda, 56, is “irretrievably broken.”
In their divorce petition, the couple asked the court to divide their communal property, business interests, and liabilities as outlined in their separation contract, which was not made public. As per Forbes, the Microsoft co-founder is fourth on the list of the world’s richest individuals with a net worth of $130.5 billion.
As for Melinda Gates, who founded Pivotal Ventures, an investment company focused on women and families in 2015, her net worth is not clear. She has also authored a book.
Besides, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had net assets of $43.3 billion at the end of 2019. Last year, the foundation said it would spend $300 million on treatment, detection, and vaccines to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
While it is not clear when Bill and Melinda separated, the pair are scheduled to appear in court in April 2022. Their Alternative Dispute Resolution date is set for March 2022.
