Katy Perry announced a new line of non-alcoholic drinks named De Soi recently, which officially launched on January 6. “If you’re about to start Sober-uary, we’re here for you this month!” enthuses Katy Perry. She teamed up with Morgan McLachlan, co-founder of Los Angeles-based botanical beverage outfit AMASS to create her French aperitif-inspired, non-alcoholic bubbly drink.
Katy Perry arguably represents the biggest name to join the party on the non-alcoholic side of things. She follows Blake Lively, who released her own line of mixers last year.
“Just in time for SOBERUARY! Excited to announce @drinkdesoi a line of sparkling nonalcoholic aperitifs I’ve created w/ my fellow new mama/ botany babe Morgan McLachlan,” Katy Perry wrote in a tweet. “Our apéritifs are full of feel-good adaptogens for a drink that helps you create, relax & ease into the night.”
She continued in a follow up tweet:
“They come in three fun flavors: Golden Hour with citrus & lemongrass , Champignon Dreams with strawberries & grapefruit , and Purple Lune with blackberry nectar, vanilla oak & rose petals Available now at http://drinkdesoi.com. Cheers to pleasure with restraint!”
A 750ml bottle of De Soi is priced at US$25, while the brand is also offering a monthly subscription service.
While chatting with PEOPLE about the new line, Katy Perry explains why she went ahead with making the non-alcoholic drinks. “Well, I’m 37, so I definitely can’t drink like I was in my 20s,” she quipped.
“On a weekday, having a couple [of alcoholic drinks] will take me out of the presence game for the next day or two. So I like to have a bit of self-control on the weekdays and then have dinners with friends and stuff on weekends or when I’m not working, et cetera,” Perry continues. “But really it’s about balance.”
She noted that she will “go through phases” of drinking and not drinking. “Sometimes I’m not drinking and I’m really focused,” she says. “And then sometimes I’m like, it’s not a big deal.”
De Soi, which Perry explains is French for “pleasure with restraint,” comes in three flavors: Golden Hour, Champignon Dreams, and Purple Lune.
Each drink is made of fresh ingredients, made to boost health. Purple Lune has notes of blackberry nectar, vanilla oak, and rose petals; Champignon Dreams has an earthy taste with the essence of strawberries and grapefruit; and Golden Hour is made up of warm citrus, lemongrass, and leafy herbs.
Speaking of the whole creative experience which has been a passion project for her she said, “I love herbs. I love alchemy. I love wellness. And I love the feeling of some of these different adaptogens that are actually in the drinks. Some of these herbs, ingredients will help brighten your mood or help ease you into the evening.”
Katy Perry also noted her involvement with other health-based companies such as Bragg, Impossible Foods, and Apeel and said that her new venture is part of a piece of her that has been “starting to blossom” in the “past few years.” “[It’s] just my involvement in the health and wellness space and different companies that I really believe and back and put my money where my mouth is.”
Katy Perry’s launch marks one the most significant celebrity endorsements in the widening world of non-alcoholic elixirs.
