Captain Marvel 2: Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers Will Be Back But Not Anytime Soon

We are eager to meet her!

It has been a while since we see Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers a.k.a Captain Marvel kicking *** onscreen. She appeared in the last few minutes of Avengers: Endgame to save the day (‘cause “saved the Universe” title, hands down, goes to Iron Man). But we need a movie where the Oscar-winning actress can stop being tethered to the demands of narrating an origin story (2019’s Captain Marvel that introduced her) and unleash her status as the most powerful Avenger, ever. And looks like the upcoming Captain Marvel 2 is all up for the challenge.

Captain Marvel 2 was confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and in January 2020, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the WandaVision writer, Megan McDonnell, will be writing its script. Instead of Anna Boden, Candyman reboot director, Nia DaCosta will be directing the sequel

Here’s what we’ve gathered about the project so far:

The cast:

So far, only Brie Larson has been confirmed to reprise her role in Captain Marvel 2. It is possible that Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) will be around to hand her a new mission. If she visited Hala for revenge on the Kree, characters like Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), etc could make an appearance as well. At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, we came to know that the Skrull leader Talos was on Earth, which could hint at his appearance in the sequel.

As an adult version (Teyonah Parris) of Monica Rambeau (Akira Akbar), daughter of Carol’s best friend, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), is already set to appear in WandaVision, chances are that she may drop in to meet her “Aunt Carol”. In the past, Brie Larson had also expressed her interest in the inclusion of the character of Ms Marvel, who has quite a following amongst comic fans, in the sequel.

When will Captain Marvel 2 release?

Currently, it is set to release on July 8, 2022. But it is yet to begin shooting and given the major delays in the schedule of other MCU Phase 4 movies owing to the pandemic, chances are that the release of Captain Marvel 2 will be delayed as well.

What will Brie Larson as Carol Danvers will be up to in the sequel?

Even though no official synopsis has been released, we can hazard a guess that as Captain Marvel took place in the 1990s, the sequel could choose to pick up after that and fill in the gaps like what she was up to in the 20 years leading to Avengers: Endgame. It is also possible that this arc will be explored via flashbacks while the core story will be centred in the present time (i.e., 2023 as per the MCU timeline)
