Cardi B Reebok Photoshoot Turns Into An Apology Over Cultural Appropriation

“Maybe I should have done my research.”

Cardi B and Reebok’s photoshoot for their newly released collaboration which was featured on the cover of the November issue of Footwear News became a complete scandal on social media, as the WAP star has been accused of cultural appropriation.

The cover photo of Footwear News featuring Cardi B’s Reebok collab, showcases her holding a red shoe from her sneaker line wearing a Georges Hobeika red dress exposing her shoulders, which may seem ordinary if you do not notice that Cardi has been given 8 arms other arms by the power of editing to have her represent the Hindu Deity, Durga, as a “homage” to the revered Goddess of war in the religion.

This came under fire on Twitter as multitudes of people responded to the cover photo of Cardi B’s Reebok Photoshoot as being rude and that it mocks and is a clear example of appropriating Hindu culture. One tweet also stated that “Cardi B did not pay ‘homage’ to the Hindu goddess Durga by holding a shoe in her hand, this is plain disrespect and in no way cultural appreciation. She can’t get away with this without addressing and apologizing for mocking our culture.”

Footwear News addressed the outrage by explaining their cause behind the photoshoot to PEOPLE, they apologized by stating that “Yesterday we posted content from our exclusive Cardi B cover shoot. One of the images was intended to pay homage to Hindu goddess Durga, and our intent was to show a powerful woman. However, we realize we were not considerate of certain cultural and religious perspectives and how this could be perceived as deeply offensive. We take full accountability for this oversight and we apologize. It is important we learn from this example and are sensitive to this sort of religious imagery when creative discussions are taking place in the future. Today, we’re releasing another cover from the shoot that was a subscriber exclusive.”

The apology also came from Cardi B’s side as she addressed the scandal on her Instagram story and promised to research the ideas behind photoshoot herself before accepting it. “When I did the Reebok shoot, the creatives told me I was going to represent a Goddess; that she represents strength, femininity and liberation, and that’s something I love and I’m all about,” informed Cardi before apologizing “And though it was dope, if people think I’m offending their culture or their religion I want to say I’m sorry. That was not my intent. I do not like disrespecting nobody’s religion. I wouldn’t like people to offend my religion.”

She ended her statement by assuring people that a mistake like this won’t happen ever again. “I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful; maybe I should have done my research. I’m sorry, I can’t change the past, but I will do more research for the future.”
