Chadwick Boseman Honoured At Oscars 2021 With NFT Artwork

But fans are unhappy. Here’s why!

The Oscars 2021 paid homage to the late Chadwick Boseman in quite an unusual way.

Every year, the 25 Oscar nominees for best actor, actress, and director receive a “swag bag”. The gift bag, which comes from management and acquisitions organizations AdVenture Media and Taillard Capital, contains a cornucopia of goodies and vouchers.

This year, nominees also received a one-of-a-kind digital artwork in their swag bags. One such NFT artwork which was given at the Oscars 2021 was of Chadwick Boseman.

The actor died of cancer in August last year. He was also posthumously nominated for Best Actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

All about the Chadwick Boseman NFT at Oscars 2021

Each nominee bag contains a non-fungible token or NFT. The NFT authenticates a piece of digital artwork which will be auctioned off with its proceeds going to a charity of the nominee’s choice.

One of the NFT options is a golden bust of Chadwick Boseman, created by 3D artist Andre Oshea. The cryptoart is being auctioned on Rarible. The highest bidder will receive an NFT, which would act as a certificate of ownership of Oshea’s work. Half of the proceeds from the Boseman NFT will go to The Colon Cancer Foundation. The actor also suffered from the same type of cancer.

Oshea had previously tweeted that the “buy now” price for the Boseman NFT was $1.2 million.

“The way to immortalize an artist, is to honor them with art. I was tasked to create a tribute NFT for Chadwick Boseman for the Oscars! Bringing this piece to life has been one of my most challenging & rewarding experiences as an artist,” he tweeted yesterday, sharing a first look of the GIF animation.

Isaac Rudansky, founder of AdVenture Media, also talked about the Chadwick Boseman NFT in a press release. “This rare special edition NFT is the very first offered as a tribute to the prolific actor, a unique piece of art which is limited to just 1 edition and will never be minted again,” he said.

He added that the NFT “commemorates Chadwick’s incredible legacy”.

Fans react to the actor’s NFT

It seems like some fans did not take the idea of a Chadwick Boseman NFT well. “Idk what’s worse the fact that it’s an Nft, the fact that Chadwick Boseman’s death is being commodified, or that this is in every Oscar nominees’ gift bags,” one user tweeted.

“Imagine getting a digital link to a gif of ur late best friend or co-worker’s golden head like that’s so weird right? Like that’s really wrong? No one’s death should be treated as a gift bag item?” they added.

The Best Actor snub has further angered fans about the NFT. When Anthony Hopkins was announced as the winner for Best Actor, fans flooded social media with comments on how the Oscars used Chadwick’s death to get better ratings.

“Putting a Chadwick Boseman NFT in the gift bag, as well as restructuring the traditional order of the ceremony so to end on Best Actor, seemingly to have a moment for Chadwick, all reeks of the Academy trying to capitalise on a tragedy in order to get ratings,” a user tweeted.
