Chadwick Boseman NFT Is Up For A Redesign After Major Controversy

The actor’s NFT received heavy backlash

The Chadwick Boseman NFT was given away to all the attendees of the Oscars 2021 in a swag bag. An NFT is a digital certificate of authenticity(or art) recorded on a blockchain. NFT’s can be of any form, for example, a picture.

The Chadwick Boseman NFT was designed by Andre Oshea. It was a gold sculpture of Chadwick’s head modeled in 3D, based on his face in the movie Black Panther.

Why was the Chadwick Boseman NFT sent for a redesign?

Fans of the late actor were already agitated since Boseman did not win the Best Actor Award. One Twitter user wrote, “Idk what’s worse the fact that it’s an Nft, the fact that Chadwick Boseman’s death is being commodified, or that this is in every Oscar nominees’ gift bags.” Another angry user said, “so the academy baited everyone into thinking Chadwick Boseman was going to win by putting best actor off until the last moment, didn’t give him a special tribute, commodified his death with an NFT, and made his family sit through an entire ceremony without honoring him in any way.”

Because of the backlash, Andre Oshea said,” I wanted to create a digital monument that embodied Chadwick’s influence as a hero to all the Black kids everywhere while raising awareness about colon cancer and its impact on Black communities.” And then, to clarify, he said, “I now recognize that Chadwick’s face is a triggering reminder of his death, rather than his life.” As a result, he apologized “for any upset caused.” However, the piece he created went for a redesign later.

Moreover, Oshea on his Instagram, wrote, “This past week has been a huge learning experience for me, and I appreciate all of the feedback on my work, especially from my friends and family. The process of sharing an artwork so publicly has taught me a lot about how to deal with and listen to criticism, and how to harness it in a positive way. I’d also like to take this time to address the misinformation around the project and my work. I look forward to sharing the next steps of my journey. Above all, thank you to those who have shown me great support, I am deeply grateful.”

Lastly, on Tuesday the redesigned piece will be auctioned through the NFT marketplace, Rareable.
