In the Ellen DeGeneres show recently, Kristen Bell talked about her husband, Dax Shepard’s relapse after 16 years of sobriety. She is very supportive of the progress he has shown and his conviction to grow more.
Dax Shepard dropped his relapsing news via his podcast, “Armchair Expert” on September 25 that he has again started to take opioids. For Dax this was one of the life changing podcasts he has recorded. As he was not only coming out to the world but also, he was sharing the part of himself that was broken down because of him only.
Dax revealed that he had started using Oxy after being in a motorbike crash in August. Thus, breaking his 16 years of sobriety. He used to take medications for the pain but it further increased to be a problem for him. He had relapsed back to his older state.
“For the last eight weeks … I’m on them all day, I’m allowed to be on them at some dosage because I have a prescription, and then I’m also augmenting that. And then all the prescriptions run out, and I’m now just taking 30 mil Oxys that I’ve bought whenever I decide I can do [it].” Dax spoke on the podcast about the relapse.
He also told that he realizes he needs to quit this right away. He shared that he knew that he was going into a withdrawal state and which had messed his life. He felt scared and lonely as keeping this secret to himself.
“I’m lying to other people and I know I have to quit,” he said. “But my tolerance is going up so quickly that I’m now in a situation where I’m taking, you know, eight 30s a day, and I know that’s an amount that’s going to result in a pretty bad withdrawal. And I start getting really scared, and I’m starting to feel really lonely. And I just have this enormous secret.”
Dax Shepard also shared that his biggest fear is relapsing with alcohol and drugs. “I haven’t drank a beer in 16 years, and I haven’t snorted a line in 16 years. And if I have one day, then I might as well f——– have what I really want and then start over. And my fear of that is if I do that, it may take me three years to get that back in the cage and I may die.”
He also said that when he attended a meeting, which he called “most incredible 90 minutes”, he felt the need to open about this secret. He felt that he needed to tell Kristen Bell, his wife about his dark secret. He was even scared to come out clean publicly due to the effects it will have on Kristen as she had to again go and give interviews to people and talk about how her husband had relapsed after 16 years. But he also felt “hopeful and humble” about the future after the coming out to his supportive wife. He was also shocked to see the support of the fans after he told them after his relapse journey.
“Kristen doesn’t deserve for the next six months for every f—— interview she does to be, ‘Oh, Dax relapsed,'” he said. “I’m sorry and I’m embarrassed I’ve put other people in this situation.”
Well the loving wife, Kristen Bell seems to be proud and supportive about the progress that Dax had made. She even expressed that she felt extremely proud of the fact that he is addictive to growth and even after relapsing he is willing to make the changes day by day.
“Everybody is up against their own demons. Sometimes it’s anxiety and depression, sometimes it’s substance abuse.” Kristen told Ellen.
“The thing that I love most about Dax is that he was able to tell me and tell us and say, ‘We need a different plan,'” she continued. “We have a plan — if he has to take medication for any reason, I have to administer it. But he was like, ‘We need a stronger plan.'”
She also shared that she loved the fact Dax was willing to change for the family. He was willing to come out of his dark place and hold onto the ray of hope. “He’s addicted to evolving. He was like, ‘I don’t want to risk this family and I did, so let’s put new things in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again.’ We’re going back to therapy. I love that he’s addicted to growth.”
Kristen Bell has two beautiful daughters Lincoln, 7 and Delta, 5 with Dax Shepard. It is also seen that she has been very public about the support she offers to her husband. She even shared an emotional tribute to her husband back in 2018 that she was “in awe of his dedication”.
She even celebrates Dax sobriety birthday more than his real birthday. Kristen makes a great deal about his new birthday tradition.
“I’m very happy he was born so I celebrate his birthday, but I’m extraordinarily [happy] that he has stayed sober because that’s what allows me to have him in my life as a husband and as a father,” Kristen told the People in an interview.
