Dax Shepard shares two daughters with his wife Kristen Bell, Delta Bell Shepard (age 6) and Lincoln Bell Shepard (age 8), who have something to say about their daddy’s relapse. Dax Shepard personally shared his relapse story with two of his daughters.
What did Dax say?
On Tuesday, in the podcast In Fact with Chelsea Clinton, Dax Shepard revealed how he spoke to his daughters and Kristen Bell about alcoholism. He said, “They know that dad goes to an AA (Alcoholic Anonymous) meeting every Tuesday and Thursday.” He then continued, “Back when my daughters wanted to be with me 24 hours a day, she said, ‘Where are you going?’ I said, ‘I’m going to AA,’ She said, ‘Why do you have to go?’ I said, ‘Because I’m an alcoholic and if I don’t go there, then I’ll drink and then I’ll be a terrible dad.’ “
For which he recalls what his daughter Lincoln said. He continued, “And she said, ‘Can I go?’ And I said, ‘Well, no, you got to be an alcoholic.’ And she goes, ‘I’m gonna be an alcoholic.’ ” At this point, Shepard continued laughing and added “And I said, ‘You might become one. The odds are not in your favor, but you’re not there yet.”
As cute as it is, he explained to his kids about his relapse too. He said to them, “They knew when I relapsed?. ‘Well, Daddy was on these pills for his surgery and then Daddy was a bad boy and he started getting his own pills.’ “
Shepard on his Sobriety
After being sober for 16 years, Shepard couldn’t do it anymore. He said, “I had to go to my f*****g meeting and I’ve been going to for 16 years. I loved having 16 years and I loved being an inspiration to people for sobriety.”
He then continued, “I was holding onto that so much. I was deriving so much of my self-esteem from that. I was really scared of not having that and so I avoided losing that for a while.” He then added, “Eventually, I couldn’t do it and I had to tell on myself.” But now after all this, he feels fine. He says, “Today, at least, I feel better with six months than I had felt in 15 years.”
