Divorcing Brad Pitt Wasn’t A ‘Lightly’ Made Decision: Angelina Jolie

‘There’s a lot I can’t say.’

Angelina Jolie admitted that her decision to divorce Brad Pitt, her estranged spouse and father of her children, was not taken “lightly.”

In a recent interview with The Guardian’s Weekend magazine, the Oscar-winning actress and humanitarian said, “I’m not the kind of person who makes decisions like the decisions I had to make lightly. It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children.” When questioned by the journal what the previous five years had taken from her, she replied, “I mean, in some ways, it’s been the last decade. There’s a lot I can’t say.”

Brad Pitt, 57, and Angelina Jolie, 46, had been married for two years before Jolie filed for divorce.

In the year 2019, they divorced. Pitt and Jolie have been fighting for custody of their children since their divorce. Maddox, 20, Pax, 17, Zahara, 16, Shiloh, 15, and 13-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox are the children of the former couple.

Jolie, a Special Envoy for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), collaborated with Amnesty International and human rights lawyer Geraldine Van Bueren on a new book titled Know Your Rights and Claim Them: A Guide for Youth, which focuses on the rights of minors. Her fight for children’s rights has been fueled in part by her own personal experiences, she said.

“You want to make sure there is support for the children in your life,” she explained. She also expressed concern for her “whole family’s” safety as a result of the divorce, but said she “can’t speak about” specifics owing to the ongoing legal situation – Pitt admitted to having an alcohol problem and yelling at one of his children in the past, but he denied ever being physically abusive. In response to Jolie’s remarks, a source close to Pitt said, “It’s hard to see how continuing down this path benefits anybody.”

In other parts of the interview, Jolie talked about how her 20-year-old son Maddox’s rights were violated when he was refused a chance to speak in his parents’ custody dispute.

Angelina Jolie applied to testify against Brad Pitt in court on behalf of her children in March, but a judge denied her request two months later.

Regardless of the case’s outcome, she stated that “I just want my family to heal. And I want everyone to move forward – all of us, including their dad. I want us to heal and be peaceful. We’ll always be a family.”
