The Recording Academy had recently announced their list of nominations for the Grammys 2021. It looks like American singer and rapper Doja Cat has managed to find a place for herself in the Grammys 2021 nominations list.
Who is Doja Cat?
Doja Cat whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, is a singer and rapper who started her journey as a singer and rapper by uploading her music on popular streaming platform, SoundCloud after dropping out of high school.
In 2012 she uploaded her song “So High” on SoundCloud, which earned her a record deal with Kemosabe Records and RCA Records, which she signed at the age of 17. In 2014, she released her debut EP ‘Purrr!’. Her song ‘Candy’ also gained attention in the social networking site Tik Tok as it was used for a ‘dance challenge’. She released her debut album ‘Amala’ in 2018.
How did Doja Cat rise to fame?
However, the boost in her career came via her song titled ‘Mooo!’ in 2018, which became viral as a meme across the internet. She also re-released her debut album in 2019, and this time the album also included her songs ‘Mooo!’ and ‘Juicy’.
Doja Cat’s song ‘Juicy’ was also remixed by rapper Tyga, which went on to debut at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaking at number 41 eventually. This was Doja Cat’s first time ranking the charts. The song was eventually certified Platinum in the United States as well. This success also led Doja Cat’s debut album ‘Amala’ to rank at Billboard 200 album chart in 2019.
After gaining so much media attention and popularity, Doja Cat hasn’t looked back since. She went on to release songs throughout 2019 and 2020. She released her second studio album ‘Hot Pink’ in 2019, which ranked at number 9 in the Billboard 200. Doja Cat also performed her song ‘Say So’ off the album on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. Later on, in 2020, Doja Cat was featured on the remix of The Weeknd’s song ‘In Your Eyes’. She was also featured in American rapper Lil Wayne’s song ‘Shimmy’.
Doja Cat won two nominations at the 20th BET Awards in the categories of ‘Best Female Hip Hop Artist’ and ‘Video of The Year’. The remixed version of ‘Juicy’ featuring Tyga was also nominated for Top R&B Song at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards. Doja Cat won the award for The New Artist of 2020 at the 46th People’s Choice Awards. She also bagged the New Artist of the Year and Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist at the 2020 American Music Awards.
Doja Cat’s Grammys 2021 nomination
Doja Cat’s latest career landmark right now is winning three nominations at the Grammys 2021 for Best New Artist, and her single ‘Say So’ being nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Whether or not Doja Cat manages to bag these awards at the Grammys 2021 still remains to be seen. But her fans are definitely rooting for her with the end results being unveiled on March 14, 2021. She will also be performing at the Grammys 2021 marking her debut performance at the ceremony.
