Ever since the Rumor Has It singer posted a picture of herself on her birthday, suddenly all her life’s successes took a backseat ‘cause Adele’s weight loss, evident in the picture, went instantly viral– but for all the wrong reasons. People were either treating it as the biggest milestone in her life or accusing her of resorting to cosmetic procedures to reduce weight. While Adele is yet to respond to the constant trolls, her former fitness trainer came to her defense.
Pete Geracimo, the singer’s former personal trainer, took to Instagram to address the “disheartening” and “fat-phobic” response of people “questioning the genuineness” of Adele’s weight loss. In his heartfelt post, he explained that losing weight was never what spurred Adele to embrace working out or correcting her diet- her sole focus was to lead a healthier life.
“In my personal experience of working with her through many highs and lows, she always marched to the beat of her own drum on her own terms,” he wrote. “She never once pretended to be something that she wasn’t.”
He went on to explain that “getting super skinny” was never something that Adele wanted. All she wanted was to be healthy, “specially post-pregnancy and post-surgery.” Pete was hired to prep Adele after the release of 25, for her then-upcoming world tour which was a “13-month grueling schedule.”
“In that time, she warmed to training and made better food choices. As a result, she lost considerable weight and people took notice. Her body transformation was splashed across every media outlet. The attention it generated was mind-blowing.”
He maintains that she never set out to be a role model or use her appearance to sell records. On top of everything, he wrote, she focused on herself so that she could take care of her son, Angelo.
“Since she moved to LA, it’s been well documented that she underwent some tough personal changes. It’s only natural that with change comes a new sense of self and wanting to be your best possible version. She embraced better eating habits and committed to her fitness and ‘is sweating’!” he further shared, adding that she wanted to focus on herself and was not doing it “for album sales, publicity, or to be a role model” but for herself and for son, Angelo.
Pete stressed that those criticizing Adele’s weight loss should appreciate her hard work to get healthy and understand that she never intended to “make others feel bad about themselves”. “She has not changed from the Adele we grew up with and have loved. There is just a little less of her to go around,” he added.
