Dua Lipa Faces Legal Action After Allegedly Sharing A Photo Of Herself By Paparazzi
According to United States court documents, Dua Lipa shared a paparazzi-snapped photo of herself on Instagram “without permission or authorization”. Craig Sanders, Attorney in U.S. District Court in California, filed an eight-page copyright infringement complaint.
The complaint on Tuesday accused pop star, Dua Lipa of sharing a paparazzi photo to her personal Instagram account on February 7, 2019. She posted the photo about four days after the image was taken and later deleted it, which depicted the pop singer at the airport “clutching her airline ticket and passport, while wearing an oversized hat.”
She captioned the photo, “I’ll be living under big fluffy hats until further notice.”
Integral Images, the paparazzi firm says Dua Lipa profited from the photo, as her Instagram feed acts as a marketing tool for her music. It is seeking $150,000 damages and has asked for a jury trial. The company is also asking for an order preventing the singer from further acts of infringement, as well as legal costs. It claims Lipa “knowingly” posted the photo to social media without permission and stood to make money from the shot. According to U.S. Copyright Office records, on February 20, 2021, the request was granted for copyright for the images.
According to reports, the complaint reads, “The Account is monetized in that it contains content designed to accumulate followers who are directed to, via link and/ or advertisement, consume and purchase Defendant’s content, Defendant profits from these activities.” Lipa’s team has been contacted for a response.
As per copyright law, only the photographer owns the rights over images which cannot be posted by other people even if they are the subject.
Dua Lipa is not the first star to be sued for posting paparazzi images of themselves to social media. Celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Liam Hemsworth, and Khloe Kardashian have also faced similar cases. However, Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber settled complaints brought by photographer Robert Barbera in 2019. In the same year, Jennifer Lopez was sued by Splashy News and Picture Agency for posting a copyrighted photo of herself and then-boyfriend Alex Rodriguez to Instagram. The company later voluntarily dismissed the complaint with prejudice.
