Dwayne Johnson: Once A Troubled Teen Dabbling In Theft To Becoming Hollywood’s Highest-Paid Actors

He battled depression for years

Who was Dwayne Johnson before he became “The Rock”, became the box office king with his movies, build a crazy net worth, or became #FamilyGoals with the bond he shares with his wife, Lauren Hashian and daughters, Simone (18), Jasmine (14), and Tiana (2)? As the 6′ 5″ marvel turns 48 today, here is a peek at how he (literally) wrestled with destiny to build his life.

  • A rootless childhood riddled with financial insecurity

In his early teens, Dwayne Johnson jumped from one school to another as his father, Rocky Johnson a wrestler, kept bouncing between the wrestling circuits for the WWF to earn for his family. There was even a time when they came home and found a “padlock on the door and an eviction notice”, seeing which his mother broke down.

The seemingly never-ending financial disrepair forced Dwayne Johnson to become a part of a theft ring to steal from elite tourists, something which often landed him in police custody. The only positive thing in his life was the fact that to “train and build my body” he didn’t need financial resources.

  • At 16, Dwayne Johnson was 6’4 225lbs, with a rebellious teen streak going on

But fate had other plans for him. Despite his rudeness and tendency to rebel, one of his teachers, Jody Cwik took him under and offered him a place in the school’s football team, becoming a “father figure to me and mentor.”

  • But even football couldn’t save him from his supressed emotions and he plunged into depression

Dwayne Johnson went on to play football at the University of Miami on a scholarship. But his skills as a footballer dwindled and he found himself wrestling with symptoms of depression.

“I didn’t know what it was,” he said. “I didn’t want to do a thing, I didn’t want to go anywhere. I was crying constantly.”

  • He turned to what had always given him solace- wrestling- and thus Dwayne Johnson turned into “The Rock”

He made his WWF debut in 1996, fighting under his father’s moniker of “Rocky Maivia”. While Dwayne Johnson eventually found success in the ring, embracing the identity of “The Rock” and won multiple championships, he always wanted something more…

  • …a chance at Hollywood stardom.

Dwayne Johnson made his Hollywood debut in 2001 with The Mummy Returns, wherein he was cast as an “unintelligible half-naked warrior” with some “truly awful early 21st century CGI”. But producers and directors alike saw the potential in Dwayne Johnson, who has, to date, done more than 40 films and lead hit franchises like the Jumanji series and Fast and Furious movies.

  • And now, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is recognized as one of the highest-paid actors by Forbes.

Yep, as of 2020, Dwayne Johnson’s net worth is estimated to be $320 million!
