Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s lawsuit has taken a new turn. The actor’s lawyers have served a subpoena to Elon Musk and the American Civil Liberties Union, three months before the trial is set to begin.
But before the trial starts in May, several hearings are expected to take place in the coming weeks to determine details for the same.
Why has Elon Musk been involved in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s court battle?
Elon Musk and Amber Heard briefly dated after her marriage to Depp ended in 2016. Depp has repeatedly alleged she cheated on him, that she started dating Musk before she and Depp split.
The Tesla CEO, however, has denied such claims. He even joked about having a “cage fight” with Depp to settle matters, when his name kept popping up in the libel case.
As per Deadline, Elon Musk’s subpoena includes 24 requests that cover “all communications between you and Ms. Heard regarding Mr. Depp.” It also requests for any information regarding The Sun case, the ACLU and “any allegations of physical abuse or domestic violence committed by either Mr. Depp or Ms. Heard.”
Meanwhile, Depp’s legal team’s subpoena to ACLU requests information on donations, the defamation suit and conversations about “the relationship between Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard.”
Why has ACLU been subpoenaed?
ACLU was one of the two charitable organisations, the other being the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, to which Amber Heard promised to donate her $7 million divorce settlement.
After she made this announcement, the Aquaman actress was named as an ACLU Ambassador for women’s rights in 2016.
But last month, Depp’s lawyers accused her of going back on her promise and pocketing the money she planned on donating. They claimed that her pledge was nothing but a “sham”.
As per reports, Heard has only donated $100,000 to CHLA so far, despite the organisation writing to her in 2019 asking if she intended on fulfilling her pledge.
Heard’s lawyers were prompt in responding to the claims. “Mr. Depp’s effort to plant stories in the media criticizing Amber for not yet fulfilling all the donations she pledged to charity is yet another desperate attempt to divert attention from the UK Court’s findings relating to allegations of Mr. Depp committing domestic abuse and violence,” her lawyer Elaine Bredehoft told Deadline.
“Amber has already been responsible for seven figures in donations to charitable causes and intends to continue to contribute and eventually fulfill her pledge,” she added. “However, Amber has been delayed in that goal because Mr. Depp filed a lawsuit against her, and consequently, she has been forced to spend millions of dollars defending Mr. Depp’s false accusations against her.”
Well, Elon Musk’s entry into Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s case makes for an interesting turn of events.
