More often than not, celebrity baby names evoke a sense of intrigue and bafflement. It was little different in Elon Musk and his Canadian partner Grimes’s case—their newborn’s unusual name X Æ A-12 (pronounced ‘Ex Ash A Twelve’) had got netizens discussing. Up until things got really weird. So much so, they had to get it changed—precisely when fans got around to pronouncing it right. Umm, that’s right. Elon Musk’s baby’s name is now tweaked to X Æ A-Xii.
Grimes took to social media to divulge the reason behind the sudden change—to comply with the Californian rules. She seemed to take the need for a change in a positive stride, and opined that the new name looked better. “You aren’t allowed to have numbers in your name so she replaced the numbers with Roman numerals,” she added in the post, in response to a query by a follower.
Not too long ago, Grimes had taken to Instagram to reveal the meaning and significance of her baby’s name.
In that post, she explained: “X” stands for “the unknown variable.” Meanwhile, “Æ” is the Elven spelling of AI, which is shorthand for artificial intelligence and the word for “love” in several languages, including Japanese. “A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favourite aircraft). No weapons, no defences, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent. The “A” in the name also represents “Archangel,” which she described as her favourite song.”
Unsurprisingly, despite the tweak, the fuss around the name simply fails to die down. Several fans requested for ways to pronounce it right. And, well, it’s kinda cute that both Musk and Grimes have different ways to spell it. For instance, when Musk was quizzed to pronounce it on a recent podcast with host Joe Rogan, he said, “I mean it’s just X, the letter X. And then, the Æ is, like, pronounced ‘Ash’… and then, A-12, A-12 is my contribution.” On the other hand, when Grimes was getting chatty with her followers on Instagram, the singer wrote, “It’s just X, like the letter X. Then A.I. Like how you said the letter A then I.”
Elon Musk and Grimes made their relationship official in May 2018—and they welcomed the baby early this year. Musk has five children—twins Griffin and Xavier and triplets Damian, Saxon and Kai—from his last marriage. X Æ A-Xii happens to be the couple’s first child together.
