Friends Cast’s Views On Matthew Perry’s Fight With Addiction Over The Years

The star battled with Vicodin addiction.

The Friends cast has helped star Matthew Perry recover from his addiction through every stage. Here is what the cast members have said of their fellow friend and co-star.

Matthew Perry, who played the fan-favorite Chandler Bing on Friends had met with a tragic jet ski accident in 1997, during his hospitalization, the actor was prescribed the painkiller Vicodin.

Even after his recovery, Matthew continued to use the medicine leading to his addiction. After going to rehab twice and with the help of his Friends cast, the star finally got better in 2002, returning to shoot the finale season.

Now, the reunion episode has brought together Friends cast even closer. Let’s take a look at what each cast member has said about Matthew Perry and his personal battles over the years:

Courtney Cox

Courtney Cox, who played Chandler Bing’s wife, Monica Geller on Friends, has praised Matthew Perry for his “ability to show very raw emotion and make close connections with his audience,” which is also the reason for why “everyone loves him so much.”

She told this to Buzzfeed back in 2015 while also saying that “I loved that Matthew found a way to make his character relatable by showing vulnerability in the personal struggles he was facing.”

Matt Leblanc

Matt LeBlanc, who plays Chandler’s best bud on Friends, as Joey Tribbiani, talked about his difficulty in trying to reach out to Matthew Perry.

He told People Magazine in 2002 that, “I tried to talk to him (Matthew Perry),” but, sadly for Perry, “there wasn’t a response. It’s such a personal struggle; they need to bottom out on their own.”

Lisa Kudrow

Lisa Kudrow, who played the quirky Phoebe Buffay on the sitcom, has opened up about how the Friends cast members dealt with the Matthew Perry’s addiction.

“Hard doesn’t even begin to describe it,” she revealed in an interview. “When Matthew was sick, it was not fun. We were just hopelessly standing on the sidelines. We were hurting a lot. Matthew is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met in my life. He’s charming and hilarious. Most of our hard laughs came from Matthew.”

David Schwimmer

David Schwimmer, who completed the trio of the goofy boys on Friends with his role of Ross Geller, has not said a lot about his fellow friend Matthew Perry, but in 2003 the star was asked a question by Oprah Winfrey about whether it was “hard to see a friend in trouble.”

David seemed hesitant to answer while Jennifer Aniston was seen nodding towards a no. He vaguely replied “it was really hard.” This was probably done to preserve the private life of Matthew Perry.

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston, known for her iconic role of Ross Geller’s on-screen spouse Rachel Green, has talked about how fragile the topic of Matthew Perry’s addiction really is.

She claimed Matthew to be “one of the most sensitive people I’ve ever met” in an interview from 1997. “His feelings get hurt,” she also explained on how fame has impacted his personal struggles.

“He cares what people think. He even bruises easily.”
