Nawazuddin Siddiqui hasn’t always had it easy in life. In fact, he is one of those people who lived in a small town and did odd jobs to make ends meet. He was unaware of his skill as an actor and entertainer. All through his college life, he had to hustle hard to make a name for himself in the industry.
The night that made Nawazuddin Siddiqui discover his passion for acting
Nawazuddin Siddiqui spent his college days in Vadodara where he even worked as a chemist for a long time. Like any other child growing up in a small town, he would often go and watch Ram Leela plays with his family. When his friend played the role of ‘Ram’ in one such play, Nawazuddin Siddiqui realized the effect of acting as an art. That night, something magical happened: the thought of being an actor became a dream for him.
That is how it all started; that is how Nawazuddin Siddiqui realized what his calling was. Now, he needed a plan to make his dream come true. As a first step, he moved to Mumbai to study in the National School Of Drama. In an interview with Humans of Bombay, he remembers those days by saying, “Financially, I wasn’t well off. I would borrow money from my friends, saying I’d return them in 2 days. Two days later I would borrow money from someone else and pay the first person back. I lived in a flat with four other people – it was about survival… But my family always had my back. They constantly told me to not give up!”
From selling coriander to working as a watchman, nothing could stop him!
We all grow up thinking that actors live a fancy life. While that might be true, we often forget all the struggles and hardships that a struggling actor goes through. “I worked odd jobs – sometimes as a watchman, sometimes selling coriander. I even held acting workshops! I must have gone for a 100 auditions and took up every single role that came my way, no matter how small it was. It took 12 years before I got a ‘breakthrough’. It wasn’t easy – the struggle was not beautiful, it was just that; a struggle” revealed Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
