Sheeran has had a few minor acting appearances during his career, and his cameo on the first episode of Game of Thrones’ seventh season became a particularly memorable moment in the show’s existence. Sheeran reflected on his cameo as a Lannister soldier, explaining how he got the part and admitted that the “polarizing” reaction to the sequence wasn’t what he was hoping for.

He revealed that his Game of Thrones cameo was supposed to be a surprise for actress Maisie Williams, who was a fan, but that it was spoiled by her co-star and on-screen sister Sophie Turner.

At the 53:30 mark of the podcast, he explains, “Sophie said at Comic-Con, ‘We’ve got Ed Sheeran on the next season.’ I think Maisie was like, ‘What?’ ‘Cause she didn’t know not to say.”

He added that Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody had recorded a cameo for Season 3 and was able to introduce him to the crew behind the show, which led to him getting his own cameo. “So I was in touch with the creators from 2012, I think, and then obviously they were like, ‘This doesn’t make sense,’” he continued. “But then it made sense. … I feel like people’s reaction to it sort of muddied my joy to it.”

Because a majority of Game of Thrones was filmed in Ireland, Ed Sheeran stated that he first met Maisie Williams when she came to one of his gigs in Dublin. He explained that Williams’ adored role was never intended to see an eighth season, saying, “She’s always been awesome. I don’t think they had written the ending yet. It was meant to be her last season but it wasn’t. And as a surprise for her, cause it was her last season, they would get me on. So, she was meant to turn up on set, and I was by the fire. She was meant to know her lines and everything, get down and be like, ‘Hang on.'”

Despite the fact that the fan reaction spoiled his enjoyment of the experience, he claimed it was still a good one. “Mate, it was great,” he said, adding that he has previously taken Kit Harington and other cast mates on a night out. In addition, he stated that Arya is his favourite character on the entire show.
