Gigi Hadid On How She’s Raising Daughter Khai As A Multiethnic Child

The mum had some beautiful insights to give.

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik are raising their daughter to embrace her multiple ethnicities.

In an interview with i-D‘s Osman Ahmed, Hadid was asked how she’s approaching parenthood. “So much of it is instinctive, but I find with raising a mixed-race child, lots of it is actively thinking about how to address that,” Ahmed went on.

The model, 26, responded to the question in great detail.

“We [she and Zayn] think about it and talk about it a lot as partners and it’s something that’s really important to us, but it’s also something that we first experienced ourselves,” she began.

Gigi’s father, Mohamed Hadid, is Palestinian, while her mother, Yolanda, is Dutch-American. Meanwhile, Zayn’s dad is British-Pakistani while his mom is half-Irish.

The model went on, “Because both of our parents are their own heritage. We are that first generation of those mixed races, and then that comes with that first generational experience of being like, ‘Oh damn, I’m the bridge!'”

Hadid added that this is not something her parents could help her with — because it’s not something “they experienced” — and she had to figure it out herself.

“It’s something I’ve always thought about my whole life.”

The new mum shared that she’s sometimes made to feel “too White” to stand up for her Arab heritage. “You go through life trying to figure out where you fit in racially. Is what I am, or what I have, enough to do what I feel is right?” she added.

“Am I allowed to speak for this side of me, or is that speaking on something that I don’t experience enough to know?”

Speaking about how she and Zayn Malik are raising daughter Khai, Gigi Hadid said –

“I think that Khai will grow up feeling out the way that she can or wants to be a bridge for her different ethnicities.”

Gigi added that unlike her, Khai would be able to share her experiences with her parents because they too are in the same boat.

“But I think that it will be nice to be able to have those conversations, and see where she comes from [with] it, without us putting that onto her.”

“What comes from her is what I’m most excited about, and being able to add to that or answer her questions, you know?”

During an interview with Vogue back in February, Gigi Hadid revealed what her daughter will call her four grandparents. And it was the most beautiful thing ever.

Khai will call Mohamed Jido, which is “grandpa” in Arabic. Yolanda will be Oma, which is “grandmother” in Dutch. Zayn’s father will be Abu, from Urdu while his mom would be Nini, a variation of the British Nana.
