Henry Cavill’s girlfriend, Natalie Viscuso, came under fire this week for a resurfaced blacked-up picture of her.
The photo shows the star in east African tribal attire, her skin colored from the neck down.
As the old photo surfaced online, Viscuso was accused of cultural appropriation. The controversy escalated to an extent that people called on Netflix to remove Henry Cavill from The Witcher because he was dating Viscuso.
In fact, a petition was created to force Netflix to drop the actor from the show. “Replace racist Henry Cavill on Netflix’s The Witcher,” the title read.
Speaking on the issue, Viscuso finally cleared the air and provided her side of the story
She apologized for the pictures and explained the context
“Firstly, I’d like to say that I’m sorry if this image surfacing has caused any offense. It is a photo from 2008 for a TV show in Namibia,” Natalie told the Daily Mail. “The tribe I was living with painted my skin as part of an initiation ceremony and an acceptance into their culture.”
“Never in a million years did I think that this would be offensive, in fact, I felt honored that they would initiate me,” she added.
“However, with the lessons that we are all learning in today’s climate, it is important that I recognize that this is potentially hurtful. My deepest and most sincere apologies.”
As is clear, the photo was taken in 2008—long before Viscuso and Cavill started dating or even knew each other. She was just 18 back then.
Back in May, Henry Cavill made a lengthy Instagram post—urging people to stop the speculations about his personal life and girlfriend.
“I am very happy in love, and in life,” he wrote. “I’d be enormously grateful if you were happy with me. If you can’t bring yourself to be happy with me, then at the very least try to do yourself proud and be the best version of yourself.”
Meanwhile, Henry Cavill and girlfriend Natalie Viscuso looked loved-up on their recent date
Cavill and Viscuso were spotted enjoying a lunch date at café in Fort Lauderdale in Florida. A fan at the same café shared pictures of the couple in the background.
Although Viscuso’s face wasn’t visible in the photos, the PDA gave away that the actor was with his girlfriend.
