Some of the Grey’s Anatomy Exits that made everyone wonder
Grey’s Anatomy has been a fan favorite show for more than a decade now, and it has experienced various bumps on its way, including some controversial exits. When a show continues for such a long period of time, it is inevitable that it will have multiple backstage stories hiding somewhere safe. Well, the stories that matter the most to the fans are the ones involving their favorite cast member and especially the ones which hide the reason behind their sudden exit from the show.
Was Katherine Heigl really the ‘difficult one’?
Grey’s Anatomy has had various controversial exits of some big names over years, but people were way too curious to know the reason behind these, and couldn’t get any answers. Well, it seems like the wait is over as you can now get all your answers in Lynette Rice’s new book, How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy, which is all set to publish on September 21. According to an excerpt published by The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, actress Katherine Heigl explained the reason behind her exit from Grey’s Anatomy in 2010. Earlier it was reported that the reason behind this infamous exit lies in a 2008 event that “ambushed” the writers of the show as well as show creator Shonda Rhimes.
In 2008, ‘The Ugly Truth’ fame decided to withdraw her name from an Emmy nomination for her character of Dr. Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy being awarded as the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. At that time Katherine said ” I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination,” however, now the actress feels that it was not fair to the writers of the show. “I thought I was doing the right thing. And I wanted to be clear that I wasn’t snubbing the Emmys,” she said in the book. “I could have more gracefully said that without going into a private work matter. It was between me and the writers. I ambushed them, and it wasn’t very nice or fair,” she added.
Along with clearing this controversy that gave her a “reputation for being difficult,” Katherine Heigl, 42, explained the real reason behind her exit from Grey’s Anatomy.
“I started a family, and it changed everything,” Heigl said. “It changed my desire to work full-time. I went on family leave and just got to be a [mom], and it changed my whole perspective… that was really the turning point.” She further said that she still wanted to work. “[Shonda] wanted to try to figure out how I could do both [parenting and the show], and I kind of wanted to do both,” she continued. “There wasn’t a great way to compromise the work schedule that didn’t negatively affect the crew or the cast. It wasn’t feeling fair to them or the show to ask them to bend around my needs.” And hence a great actress had to leave a great show.
Patrick Dempsey terrorized the crew
Well this is not the only Grey’s Anatomy exits that will draw the attention of the readers, there is yet another one, a very famous one that definitely might have made you question ‘why?’
It’s none other than Patrick Dempsey’s 2015 exit, an actor who played Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd for eleven seasons. As per this unauthorized book, the exit of Dempsey was majorly because he ‘was terrorizing the set’ as well as his feud with Ellen Pompeo and creator Shonda Rhimes. According to the former executive producer James D. Parriott, “There were H.R. issues.” “He sort of was terrorizing the set. Some cast members had all sorts of PTSD with him,” he said. ” I think he was just done with the show. He didn’t like the inconvenience of coming in every day and working. He and Shonda were at each other’s throats,” James added.
According to an interview given by Patrick Dempsey about his exit, “It’s 10 months, 15 hours a day. You never know your schedule, so your kid asks you, ‘What are you doing on Monday?’ And you go, ‘I don’t know,’ because I don’t know my schedule,” he explained. “Doing that for 11 years is challenging.” Apart from these reasons his personal relationship with co-star Ellen Pompeo wasn’t great and at the same Rhimes started to feel the tension with Dempsey and so finally “Shonda had to say to the network, ‘If he doesn’t go, I go,’” Renshaw said. “Nobody wanted him to leave, because he was the show. Him and Ellen. Patrick is a sweetheart. It messes you up, this business,” he added.
