Jada Pinkett Smith gets teared up on talking about motherhood
On the occasion of Jada Pinkett Smith’s 50th birthday, which she celebrated at her Calabasas home last Saturday, she was joined by her mom Adrienne Banfield Norris and daughter Willow Smith on a recent episode of “Red Table Talk.” The ‘Girls Trip’ alum was surprised by some of her celebrity friends, who recorded their special birthday wish for Jada as well as one interesting question for her in a video, which was played one by one as Smith answered them thoroughly.
Well, there were various interesting questions for Jada Pinkett Smith on Wednesday’s episode of RTT, however, there were few which caught the most attention.
And one of those questions was from “Black Panther” star and Jada’s old friend Angela Bassett, who asked her pal about “What has been the most difficult thing for you to overcome?” and ‘The Matrix’ actress had the most wholesome answer for this question which even made her cry a little. The conversation began when Jada answered that she has “overcome so many difficult things,” and Willow joined her to say that her favorite example was seeing how her mother raised her and Jaden.
“Raising children, I don’t care who they are, that’s challenging,” Pinkett Smith shared. “Being a mother is challenging because you sacrifice a lot. But I’ll tell you what, sacrificing for you guys was sacred.” She then explained that there’s “a difference between sacrifices that actually empower your life, versus sacrifices that steal life,” and that she had to “learn the difference between the two.” Towards the end, she called her kids the “greatest gift in my life” and an “amazing treasure” along with a few tears in her eyes.
Jada and Sheree shares a ‘sisterhood’
However, Jada Pinkett Smith had yet another answer to this question of Angela Bassett. According to the 50-year-old actress, another difficult thing she overcame in her life was forming a ‘sisterhood’ with Will Smith’s ex-wife, Sheree Zampino. “I would say another challenge was smoothing out my thoughts around the relationship with Sheree and me,” she said. “That was a real process.” Sheree and Will married each other back in 1992 and welcomed a son together named Trey Smith. However, the couple divorced in 1995 and Will went ahead to marry Jada in 1997. Since then this family has been a blended one who spends some good time together every now and then.
“When I think about our relationship now, there’s a real sisterhood there,” Pinkett Smith further explained. “But it took 20-some years.” She further talked about their family equation.”It was really a transformation for all of us, having a blended family and getting to a place where there was the ease with it and having complete, utter acceptance. Ree has acceptance for me and all my nonsense. I have acceptance for her and all her nonsense. There’s a really beautiful sisterhood there,” she explained.
George Clooney’s hilarious wish to Jada
Yet another celebrity whose question for Jada Pinkett Smith was fun to encounter was legendary actor George Clooney. The ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ alum started his video message on a fun note saying, “they tell me that you’re turning 50 which, uh, that’s not possible, because that would mean that I’m 60, and that’s not possible.” Then he further went to ask Jada, “How do you put up with Will? You’re intelligent, talented, successful, and beautiful and you have all these qualities that quite honestly, Will doesn’t have and I want to know how after all these years you do it. How do you do it?” he asked as everyone else burst into laughter.
“I think that what you really have to learn is how to have a friendship, because really, how do you put up with anybody? How do you put up with yourself?” the ‘Collateral’ star replied. “The idea of when you’re expecting someone to fill your happy place and be your happy place versus you creating your happy place within, you have to be your cake. You’re grateful when someone wants to be the icing or cherry on top but you got (to be) your cake” she added.
