American actress Jennifer Aniston recently learned during her ‘Friends Reunion’ that her Friends co-star Matthew Perry, used to go through ‘self-torture’ during the set of the original Friends TV show.
Matthew Perry revealed during Friends: The Reunion, that he would sweat & “go into convulsions” if he failed to amuse the studio audience with his jokes-
“To me, I felt like I was going to die if they didn’t laugh, and it’s not healthy, for sure.”
“I would sometimes say a line and they wouldn’t laugh and I would sweat and just, like, go into convulsions. If I didn’t get the laugh I was supposed to get, I would freak out.”
“I felt like that every single night.”
Surprisingly, Jennifer Aniston was unaware of the whole situation with Matthew Perry. In an interview, Aniston revealed that she was completely unaware of Matthew Perry’s internal self-torture-
“I didn’t understand the level of anxiety and self-torture that was put on Matthew Perry, if he didn’t get that laugh, and the devastation that he felt. But it makes a lot of sense.”
Not only Jennifer Aniston, even Lisa Kudrow was surprised at Perry’s statement. When she heard Matthew Perry’s statement during Friends: The Reunion, Kudrow replied saying- “You didn’t tell us that then”.
Matthew Perry’s mental heath struggles, which also include substance abuse and addiction issues, were contributing factors to his mental heath’s deterioration. In 2016, Perry shared with BBC Radio that he could not recall filming several seasons of the hit TV sitcom Friends because of his substance abuse problem.
“I think the answer is, I don’t remember three years of it. Somewhere between season 3 and 6, I was a little out of it,”
Luckily enough, Jennifer Aniston’s co-star Matthew Perry has been doing very well nowadays. Friends executive-producer Kevin Bright spoke about Perry’s health in an interview in which he said-
“I talked to Matthew. It was great seeing him again. And what people say is what people say. I don’t have any to say about that, except it was great to see him. And I think he’s very funny on the show. But yes, I think he’s OK.”
“He seems stronger and better since the last time I saw him, and excited about going forward.”
