Every time that John Legend performs, he leaves his fans smitten with his songs. However, this time his appearance at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards was extra special. On Wednesday, Legend performed his song “Never Break”, dedicating it to his wife Chrissy Teigen, less than two weeks after they suffered pregnancy loss.
The 41-year- old singer/activist sang the song, a ballad from his latest album, Bigger Love. “This is for Chrissy,” Legend said as he introduced his performance.
On October 1, a broken-hearted Chrissy Teigen revealed on Instagram that she had a miscarriage and had lost her and John Legend’s baby boy, their third child, who they had already named Jack.
Legend’s emotionally stirring billboard performance not only left everyone teary-eyed, but hostess Kelly Clarkson introduced her friend, telling the audience: “He and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world, the highs and the lows.”
“Our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time, and I’m thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with all of us for the very special performance, possibly my favourite of the night,” she went on.
While the couple has been very strong to deal with their recent loss, during his performance audiences could hear John’s voice crack as he held back tears mid-song.
Posting the video on his Instagram, Legend wrote, “We promised each other this on our wedding day seven years ago, and every challenge we’ve faced has made that promise more powerful, more resilient. Our love will remain. We will never break.”
John released “Never Break” in June, and it has now taken on a deeper meaning.
The lyrics of “Never Break” are powerful in any context, but especially in the context of Legend and Teigen’s recent loss. Some of the lyrics include: “Whenever life is hard / We’ll never lose our way / ‘Cause we both know who we are / Who knows about tomorrow? / We don’t know what’s in the stars / I just know I’ll always follow / The light in your heart / I’m not worried about us / And I’ve never been / We know how the story ends.”
Fans on Twitter got emotional over the performance, too.
