Kanye West has filed paperwork to legally change his name to Ye. To make it official, a California judge must sign off on it, and in many cases, the name change must be published in multiple newspapers.
Kanye West stated in court documents that the name change was for “personal reasons,” but provided no further explanation.
The mercurial musician, fashion designer, and presidential aspirant tweeted nearly three years ago about changing his name following the release of his album Ye.
Before announcing, “I am YE,” he alluded to “the being” formally and formerly known as Kanye West.
The 44-year-old has previously stated that the new title has religious significance for him, in addition to being an abbreviation of his existing name.
“I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it means ‘you,'” West told radio host Big Boy in 2018, when asked about the title of his album. “So I’m you, I’m us, it’s us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confused, everything.”
West’s longtime moniker, Ye, is an abbreviation of his first name that dates back to his 2012 smash single “Clique” with Jay-Z and Big Sean (“Yeah, I’m talking Ye”). While some may refer to Ye as an alter persona, West said in 2018 on Twitter: “Without his ego, who or what is Kanye West? Just Ye.”
The eccentric rapper will host his third stadium-sized listening party for his upcoming album “Donda” on August 26 at Soldier Field in Chicago. He is reportedly recreating his Chicago childhood house in the middle of the football stadium, according to Page Six. The article includes photographs of the house, or a copy of it, being built in the field’s centre.
Unlike Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West will not change her last name.
TMZ reported that Kim Kardashian will not be changing her name, despite Kanye West’s decision to change his name to Ye (and drop West entirely).
Kim “will not eliminate West from her name” according to sources close to the couple, and “Kim feels it’s important for her to keep the same last name as her 4 children.” That is, she and Kanye have no plans to change the last names of North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. Also, Kim reportedly supports Ye’s name change, even though she believes people will still “recognize him as Kanye West.”
