West entered into a ten-year deal with the Gap clothing brand in June 2020 with plans to “modern, elevated basics for men, women, and kids at accessible price points.” While it’s not the first time that Kanye has ventured into a collab in the fashion world- his previous collabs being with brands like Nike and Adidas – this new collab came with a warning from the Former Gap CE0 of the clothing brand.
Mickey Drexler, the former Gap CEO and previously a member of Apple’s board of directors, spoke with Yahoo Finance about the brand’s latest endeavors, including West’s first released collaboration with the brand.
“I probably shouldn’t say this but I told him he shouldn’t do the deal because it doesn’t make any sense in my opinion,” he said. “I have a lot of friends at Gap still, but it doesn’t work for someone like Kanye. He is not a corporate person and Gap is a big corporation.”
Continuing on, he said, “So, I know the jacket sold out. They did $7 million on the jacket overnight. [Kanye] is a smart guy but he shouldn’t have done it. And I don’t think they should have done it, either.”
The new drop arrived shortly after Kanye held his second listening party for his 10th studio album Donda at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kanye previously rocked the red version of the puffer jacket at his first Mercedes-Benz Stadium listening party for Donda back in July.
Kanye also rocked the Yeezy Gap black puffer jacket while attending Balenciaga’s Paris show.
When Gap unveiled a Yeezy branded $200 blue puffer jacket on Kanye West’s 44th birthday in June, it sold out overnight, netting $7m in sales. Since then the sole release from the brands has been the same in black.
Kanye West and Gap’s 10-year deal also comes with the option to renew after five years, as per reports. At the five-year point, Gap is hoping that Yeezy Gap will be generating $1 billion in annual sales.
While Kanye West’s future with the brand looks to be promising, you may be surprised to know that the rapper’s association with the brand is not new.
This isn’t West’s first time working with Gap. As a teen, he worked at a Gap store in Chicago.
With his new partnership, Mark Breitbard, global head of Gap Brand, said in a press release: “We are excited to welcome Kanye back to the Gap family as a creative visionary, building on the aesthetic and success of his YEEZY brand and together defining a next-level retail partnership.”
West reflected on his time at Gap in an article he wrote for Paper magazine in 2015: “It’s funny that I worked at the Gap in high school, because in my past 15 years it seems like that’s the place I stood in my creative path — to be the gap, the bridge.”
I don’t think I had any desire to actually make clothes, but I always felt like that’s what I wanted to be around. I loved the fabrics, I loved the colors, I loved the proportions,” he added.
