Karen Gillan’s role in Marvel’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ and ‘Avengers’ as the bad-ass Nebula is loved by us all. But to get into the character of Thanos’ daughter, Karen had to say goodbye to her lovely red locks.
According to The Sun, the thought of shaving off her hair wasn’t pleasing to Gillan at first. But to put on the heavy blue makeup on face and head for her debut in Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula in 2014’s Guardian Of The Galaxy required her to closely crop her hair.
Karen Gillan did find her new self very “liberating” and that “Having no hair was an amazing experience — I’m glad I did it,” but the awkward part for her was being mistaken for a man which was also thanks to her tall height along with her new buzz-cut. “The only downside is that being bald and this tall led to a lot of people mistaking me for a man.”
Gillan also mentioned a really weird moment she had in her hotel room which again was caused by her new haircut. “People did keep calling me sir, though. One time I was laying on a hotel room bed in the dark during the day,” and then “A man came in to do the turndown service and saw me and said, ‘Oh I’m sorry, sir.’ But what was more embarassing was that Karen decided to play-along .“I was tired and didn’t want to have to explain to him that I was a woman so I just put on this deep voice and went, ‘No problem.’
Karen Gillan called this memory as “one of the weirdest moments in my life.”
Luckily for the upcoming ‘Shelly’ star, things looked bright as for the hit sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as she informed Daily Record, about her demands for the sequel. “I negotiated more hair, which was a relief, although it’s actually very liberating being bald.”
This time Gillan only had to shave the back of her head and the rest was taken care of by the makeup and prosthetics team who rounded out Nebula’s fierce look. Though this new middle ground she reached did not solve all her problems “The prosthetics are tough,” Karen informed. “Especially when there’s action that needs to be done. The worst part is that your sweat has nowhere to go under all that make-up and the costume, so sometimes, when they take it off, the sweat literally squirts out on people.”
