Darren star’s show ‘Emily in Paris’ lands up in yet another controversy. Controversy has been an inevitable part of the show ever since it’s release.
Emily in Paris centers around an ambitious young girl from Chicago who unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris. Her company has recently acquired a french luxury marketing company and she is tasked with adding an ‘American Perspective’ to their social media strategy.
The show has previously been slammed for indulging in outdated and offensive stereotypes and showing Parisians in a negative light. Then the show received a lot of hate from Chicago Pizzeria Lou Malnati’s for making a ‘heartless’ joke at their expense. The latest topic of controversy is ‘Emily’s age’.
Lily Collins recently had an interview with British Vogue regarding her show ‘Emily in Paris.’ In the interview, she was asked about her character’s age in ‘Emily in Paris’ and what is her level of professional experience.
To which she replied, “I don’t believe we’ve ever given her a specific ‘number’ for her age, but I believe she is pretty fresh out of college. Maybe this is her first year after graduation. I want to say she’s like 22-ish. She’s had enough experience at her company in Chicago to have earned the respect of her boss… She’s gone to school for this and she’s completed internships.”
Her answer left the netizens in confusion about how can a person in her 20s bag such an imperative job and afford such an expensive wardrobe.
A user on Twitter pointed out, “As if the show wasn’t unrealist [sic] enough, now you’re telling us she’s supposed to be 22? HA! There’s no way!”
Another user tweeted, “French cliches aside the greatest sin of Emily in Paris is pretending a 22-year-old can just post whatever *~content~* she wants on a global brand’s account without going through 67 layers of approval first lmaoooo.”
While everyone was busy criticizing the series, one of the fans came up with a pretty accurate answer about Emily’s character’s age by racking his brain. He tweeted, “WRONG. Emily Cooper has a master’s and she’s running the social media strategy of a major company. With that level of experience/trust, since she’s worked under kate walsh’s character long enough to get a promotion, she’s probably closer to 28.”
Lily Collins was quick to act on the blunder she made after the comments went viral. Maybe she is a communication expert in real life too. “Sorry girl. You might not be 22, but I gotta say- you do act like it sometimes!!”, she posted on an Instagram story to rectify her mistake.
