On Friday, Lizzo released her first new track in two years, Rumors, where she collaborated with Cardi B. The singers, dressed to the nines, take centre stage in the gold-plated clip, which is inspired by ancient Greece.
Clearly, such a monumental collaboration necessitates an epic visual. In Rumors, directed by Tanu Muino, Lizzo and Cardi B play the original targets of rage: Greek gods. The duo channel the Muses, goddesses of the arts, while twerking among celestial clouds, adorning themselves with gold and casual confidence.
The music video incorporates a classic formula into a funky, deep-bass synth, and victorious horns as Lizzo smiles at haters: “If you thought that I was ratchet with my ass hangin’ out / Just wait until the summer when they let me out the home, bitch.” Cardi B lifts Rumors with biting wit and unbothered flippancy, following Normani’s “Wild Side.”
Lizzo, a three-time Grammy winner, teased Rumors earlier this week with an Instagram video of herself giving Cardi B a wake-up call, with the caller ID indicating a collaboration.
Hustlers, a 2019 film starring the two, was their first collaboration. The film is based on a true incident, told in a 2015 New York Magazine article titled The Hustlers at Scores, about a group of strippers, who decide to defraud their Wall Street clientele.
Lizzo initially gained mainstream recognition the following year when her song Truth Hurts was featured in the Netflix film Someone Great. Cuz I Love You, her follow-up album, was nominated for multiple Grammys and won Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Lizzo’s latest music video, ‘Rumors,’ features some amazing looks.
Lizzo revealed some behind-the-scenes glimpses at the making of the goddess-themed video for her new single, Rumors, on Friday, including an up-close look at the one-of-a-kind braids she wore. “BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE 43 AND A HALF FOOT BRAIDS I HAD IN ‘RUMORS’— LITERALLY THE LONGEST BRAIDS IN THE WORLD ASK @guinnessworldrecords!!!!” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a video of herself going out of her trailer. “Hair by @theshelbyswain,” she continued, tagging Shelby Swain, a celebrity hairstylist.
Lizzo appears in the video wearing a skimpy bodysuit and a gold headpiece as she exits her trailer. Four people trail her, carrying her braids to keep them off the ground. She goes down a big staircase in the same attire she wore in the music video, her braids slowly unravelling behind her.
