Madonna Calls Russia’s Invasion Of Ukraine ‘Pointless’

Ukrainian President Follows Her On Instagram!

Madonna is the latest artist to weigh in on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, voicing her support for the latter. After Ukraine severed diplomatic ties with Russia and declared martial law after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an attack on the neighboring nation on February 24, Madonna took to social media to share a fan made video set to a remix of her 2005 song ‘Sorry’.

The Like A Virgin singer called for the end of “Russia’s pointless and greed-driven invasion of the Ukraine” on social media. “The war “MUST be stopped,” she said. “Putin has Violated Every Human Rights Accord in Existence. Putin has no right to try to erase the existence of the Ukraine,” Madonna captioned her video. “We support you President Zelensky!! We are praying for you and your country!”

The video features clips of Madonna dancing along with footage of the devastation in Ukraine left behind by Russia’s invasion. She ended her post by asking people to send aid to Ukraine. “Please Send in Humanitarian Aid to help millions of citizens of the Ukraine who’s lives are being affected by this CRISIS at this very moment !!”

This isn’t the first time Madonna has used her ‘Sorry’ remix to make a statement. She previously used it to soundtrack an anti-war video interlude on her 2006 ‘Confessions’ tour.

After Madonna’s post in support of Ukraine, Ukrainian president Vlodymyr Zelensky has followed her on Instagram.

While Madonna’s unique tribute has been welcomed by some for raising further awareness of the devastation in Ukraine, others criticised her for what they called a ‘tone-deaf’ or ‘narcissistic’ approach.

Madonna has since shared two additional posts about the Ukraine invasion, including footage of a missile hitting a residential building in the capital city Kyiv.

“Does This Video hurt. you as much as it hurts Me?” she asked her followers in the caption. “Putin continues his Senseless And Horrifying attacks on The Ukraine!! Innocent people are being killed and wounded every day! Innocent people are fighting for their lives And learning to shoot guns to protect themselves Refugees are crowding the borders and being stopped from escaping. So many brave people are staying to fight… God Bless You All. We are praying for you all (sic).”

Reactions to the situation in Ukraine from prominent figures in the worlds of music, entertainment and politics have been posted on social media.
