Why did Mads Mikkelsen want to talk to Johnny Depp about his role as Grindelwald?
Mads Mikkelsen is about to perform in the role of Grindelwald in the upcoming ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movie, taking over the role previously played by Johnny Depp.
However, the 55-year-old ‘Hannibal’ actor wishes he spoke to the ‘Pirates of Caribbean’ actor before he replaced him in the movie.
“I mean, obviously, they were going to do the film, and obviously he was not involved anymore,” said Mads Mikkelsen about Johnny Depp, to The Times’ Sunday Review. “But I didn’t have a dog in that fight. And I don’t know what happened [in his private life], and I don’t know if it was fair, him losing the job, but I just knew that the show was going on, and I would’ve loved to have talked to him about it if I had the chance, but I just don’t know him in that sense,” he continued.
“But they called me and they were obviously in a hurry, and I loved the script and so said yes. And I know it was controversial for many people, but that’s just the way it plays out once in a while,” he added.
Mads Mikkelsen also shared his skepticism about taking over Johnny Depp’s role. “I didn’t want to copy what Johnny had done. I think he’s a masterful actor, so copying him would’ve been creative suicide,” he said.
“I had to figure out something that was definitely my own, and yet also act as a bridge to what he had done. My take is different, and the look is a little different, but we’ll have to wait for the film’s release [next year] to find out,” he added.
Why did Johnny Depp have to drop out of his role?
Johnny Depp had to step down from his role as the dark wizard Grindelwald from the Fantastic Beasts franchise following the domestic violence fiasco with his ex-wife Amber Heard. He lost his libel suit against British tabloid, The Sun, which accused him of being a ‘wife beater’ in a story that talked about the abuse allegations made by Heard. The actor was soon dropped from the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Mads Mikkelsen’s other worries regarding the role
Previously also, Mads Mikkelsen had talked about how he thought that him taking over Johnny Depp’s role was creative suicide. In an interview with Collider, he said, “Nobody’s interested in me going in there and trying to copy anything, that would be creative suicide immediately, especially when it’s been done before and masterfully. So everybody’s expecting us to find a different path. Having said that, we need a bridge between what he did and what I’m gonna do, so those bridges you have to find together, whether it’s a certain look, whether it’s a certain attitude in certain situations, but you have to make it your own. Anything else would be plainly just creatively stupid.”
But whatever the outcome maybe we for one cannot wait to see Mikkelsen do a great job on this role on the screen!
