While on his recent visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Show, D. Wade shared the story of how his 12-year-old child Zaya, who was born a boy and named ‘Zion’, came out as transgender.
Dwayne Wade – An inspiration to millions!
Dwayne Wade has always been an inspiration to millions. While on court, his enigmatic persona and never die attitude served as a threshold for many athletes and even non-athletes who needed courage for anything whatsoever.
And now that he’s retired and is no more showing off his crazy shot-making ability, he’s still making us feel inspired and motivated as a father.
The four-time NBA Champ said, “Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home — I don’t know if everyone knows, originally named Zion; Zion, born as a boy — came home and said, ‘Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I’m ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as she and her. I’d love for you guys to call me Zaya.’’ And that was it.
Zion turned into Zaya, just like that!
And in a very undramatic and normal manner, Dwayne Wade and his family accepted Zaya for who she felt she was. Giving us all an important lesson on how we need to address and accept people from the LGBTQ+ community, as our own. They do not need a coming out party (not all of them), neither are they stereotypically over-dramatic like it is portrayed, all they need is for you to accept who they are.
But it isn’t all happy-go-lucky
Being Dwayne Wade’s kid comes with a few expenses. Ever since Zaya came out, Dwayne Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union have been extremely supportive of Zaya. Even when online bullies tried to take a jab at her for her appearance, they strongly fought against it. But it doesn’t stop at that, Dwayne has tried to lend a helping hand to anyone who might be facing the same problems of lack of awareness about the LGBTQ+ community.
It was one beautiful moment!
“Once Zaya came home and said, ‘Call me Zaya,’ and ‘I’m ready to take on this,’ I looked at her and said, ‘You are a leader. It’s our opportunity to allow you to be a voice,” Dwayne Wade said.
“Me and my wife, Gabrielle Union, we are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community, and we are proud allies as well,” Dwayne continued, “We take our roles and responsibility as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information we can, the best feedback we can. And that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it.”
This beautiful sentiment that D. Wade shares here should resonate in the hearts of all parents. And we are proud of both, D. Wade and his little one Zaya! More power to you guys!
