Netflix’s True Story: First Look At Kevin Hart Shows Him In A New Light

The comedian will star alongside Wesley Snipes in the series.

It looks like Kevin Hart is all fired up to give you a taste of “Crazy Kevin.”

The new Netflix limited series True Story, starring Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes, is set to premiere in November. With this new show, Hart will move away from his comedic comfort zone into a more dramatic role. True Story will also serve as a fictionalized account of Hart’s life, as implied by the title.

Hart and Snipes will play siblings in this upcoming show, True Story.

Hart plays Kid, a world-famous comedian and actor who returns to his hometown of Philadelphia to launch his stand-up tour and visit his errant older brother. Snipes plays Kid’s brother, Carlton, who joins him on an eventful evening that will put their shaky brotherly bond to the test. They work together to mitigate the consequences of that one bad evening and keep Kid’s career and reputation intact.

Kevin Hart and Narcos showrunner Eric Newman are collaborating on True Story’s executive production.

Hart’s production company, Hartbeat Productions, also has Mike Stein and Tiffany Brown on board as co-producers. Charles Murray, who wrote and produced the hit series Sons of Anarchy, will serve as showrunner. The first half of the eight episodes will be directed and executive produced by Stephen Williams (Watchmen, Lost), and the second half will be directed by Hanelle Culpepper (Star Trek Picard, Kung Fu). Other cast members include Tawny Newsome, Will Catlett, Paul Adelstein, Ash Santos, Lauren London, John Ales, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Billy Zane.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Eric Newman recalls how Hart called him out of the blue, saying simply, “I want to kill someone.”

“He was calling the project, ‘Crazy Kevin,'” said Newman. “But I wasn’t at all drawn to the idea of Kevin as, like, Dexter or Barry. As I did some research on Kevin, I was struck by how ambitious he is, how vast his empire is, and it dovetails slightly with the theory that I’ve been cultivating for a long time, which is the common sociopathy in really successful people: I believe a lot of them are capable of killing somebody. And I certainly thought Kid as a character would kill to protect what he had built.”

He added, “I’m really blown away, and yet, also not surprised that Kevin is as good as he is. My hope is that people are going to say, ‘Wow, who would have thought?'”

Meanwhile, Kevin Hart told the outlet about his role in True Story, “It’s a thriller; it’s like you’ve never seen me before. It’s a little artistic play. We wanted to raise the level of curiosity, like, ‘What is Kevin trying to say? Is he playing himself?’ We never refer to the character by name, just Kid. And Kid’s life kind of parallels mine to a certain degree, and then it’s exaggerated in some places.”

The new limited drama series is partly shot in Philadelphia and partly in Los Angeles. As a Netflix exclusive, True Story will be released worldwide on November 24.
