Olivia Rodrigo was already dipping in the success of her latest single ‘Driver’s license’, speculated to be about her ex Joshua Bassett who is currently dating Sabrina Carpenter – her previously released single ‘All I want’ has joined the chart topping hit.
What happened between Olivia Rodrigo Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter?
It all started when Olivia Rodrigo released her chart topping single Driver’s license. It turned out to be the best first week stream of the first single by a female artist. But it was the Easter eggs in the song that had something to do with its major success.
Before her singing stint, Olivia Rodrigo had starred in the Disney+ original show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series along with co-star Joshua Bassett. The two had started dating on sets but later broke up. The 20-year-old actor then started dating another singer Sabrina Carpenter who was also a part of the cast.
In a statement, Olivia Rodrigo even mentioned her breakup to be the inspiration behind the song. The singer said “When I came up with ‘driver’s license’, I was going through a heartbreak that was so confusing to me, so multifaceted.” As soon as the song picked up, the subtle references to Olivia Rodrigo’s ex were picked up by fans who knew the singer has made several references to Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter’s relationship after his break up with Olivia.
Sabrina Carpenter soon came up with her own song “Skins” throwing shade at Olivia Rodrigo which debuted on January 22, a few weeks after Driver’s license. “You been tellin’ your side / So I’ll be tellin’ mine,” Sabrina Carpenter’s song says.
The trio has not publicly addressed the drama in any form, but they haven’t tried to shut it down either. In interview with Billboard, Olivia Rodrigo mentioned, “I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song.”
Just when we thought this may be the end of the love triangle, Joshua Bassett has now released his song called ‘Only a Matter of Time.’ The song includes some interesting lyrics of its own.
“Time to tell the world that you’ve been lyin’ on my name / Doin’ what you want and think you’re gonna get away.”
“I’m sure that you’re hurting inside / But why would you makе your pain mine? / You’re makin’ me pay for your crimes.”
“You can’t tear me down and act like I will just forget.”
And finally, the bridge. “You can say what you like / Doesn’t mean that you’re right / Are you glad you got that out? / Do you feel better now?
Talking about the song Joshua Bassett said, “I wrote this song in the summer of 2020 in a moment in time where social media was bringing a lot of darkness to my life.” Given everything, the timing of its release is a bit suspicious for fans.
While different meanings are being deducted from the three songs, Olivia Rodrigo is sitting on the top charts with not just one but two songs. Her 2020 track ‘All I want’ has joined her recent track ‘Driver’s license’ making the singer double up on Billboard Global charts. A year before her new stand-alone single arrived, Olivia Rodrigo released “All I Want,” from Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, in which she starred.
‘All I want’ is climbing the charts while ‘Driver’s license’ still remains a smash even in the second week of release.
