Britney Spears’ years-long conservatorship under her father Jamie Spears has finally come to an end, and the pop star is on “Cloud 9.”
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny agreed with a petition from Spears saying that the arrangement “reflects a toxic environment”. Penny granted a petition by Ms. Spears’s lawyer, suspending Mr. Spears, 69, from his position as overseer of his daughter’s $60 million estate — a move Ms. Spears was pleading for, her lawyer said.
“This man does not belong in her life, your honor, for another day,” Mathew S. Rosengart, who took over as the singer’s lawyer in July, argued in court. “Please hear the plea of my client.” He said that it would be a “disaster” for Mr. Spears to remain in her life.
Upon hearing the judge Britney Spears ‘burst into tears’ as her conservatorship controlled her life and money for 13 years.
“Britney burst into tears upon hearing the judge’s decision,” a source told Page Six of the superstar’s reaction. “For the longest time, she had begun to think that she would never see the day that her father’s domineering control over every single aspect of her life would end, but it finally happened.”
The insider added, “She’s in shock and at a loss for words but literally jumping for joy. She hasn’t felt joy like this in 13 years.”
Jamie Spears was appointed her guardian in 2008, amid concerns over her mental health. Fans around the world have supported Spears through the #FreeBritney campaign over the years.
During landmark court testimony on June 23, the Grammy winner described her conservatorship as “abusive.” She later said she wants to see Jamie charged with “conservatorship abuse.”
After the conservatorship court hearing, Britney Spears shared a post on Instagram celebrating her freedom. She told her followers that she’s “on cloud 9 right now !!!!” Spears posted a video on Instagram flying a plane. “First time flying a plane and first time in a prop plane !!! Geez I was scared !!!” Britney, 39, wrote in her caption.
“Pssss bringing the ship home, JL,” the “Lucky” singer added, possibly referencing to her conservatorship.
A source told Page Six that Britney, 39, and her fiancé, Sam Asghari, were on vacation when the judge “freed her from her father.”
“She did not attend the hearing virtually,” the source said. “She had multiple detailed conversations with her lawyer before the hearing and trusted that he would get the job done, and he did.”
After the news of Jamie’s suspension broke, Britney’s fiancé, Sam Asghari, took to Instagram to congratulate her fans on the result of their efforts to liberate the pop icon.
“FREE BRITNEY!” the model/actor, 27, wrote on his Story, later adding, “She did this. Her fan base is called the Army for a reason.”
Sam Asghari also uploaded a photo of himself and Britney clasping a pink rose together with her Diamonds engagement ring on full display.
Over on his grid, Asghari shared an image of a “lioness” — his nickname for Britney — with the following caption: “The power of the lioness!!!!!”
