Priyanka Chopra Gets Candid With Oprah Winfrey: “I Was Thrown Into The Deep”

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview, Oprah is back with another celebrity that has made her mark throughout the globe. Priyanka Chopra, the Quantico actress was seen on Super Soul, Oprah Winfrey’s show on Saturday, March 20.

The actress talked about very intimate moments from her life, her career journey and its struggles, her life as Miss World, and how she faced harassment in the industry. She also thanked her parents for always supporting her and giving her a sense of freedom from a very early age. And at the end, she also opened up about her love story with Nick Jonas.

Women Should Support Women

Priyanka Chopra talked about how women should support fellow women during the Oprah interview. She even revealed that this responsibility becomes more prominent when you are a privileged member of society.

Priyanka said that she belonged in a family where women were never made to feel undervalued and that experience helped her during her UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador journey.

“There are so many women in the world that don’t have a choice in their own existence. It’s decided when they have kids, who they marry, what jobs they do—if they have jobs, whether they go to school,” she said.

Chopra likes to have a sense of faith

The 38-year-old also talked about her “spiritual foundation” while growing up in India. Chopra shared how she went to a convent school, which helped her understand Christianity, and how her father used to sing in mosques that helped her understand Islam. She also went to describe her experience of how India is a “swirling number of religions.”

“I am a Hindu. I pray, I have a temple in my home, I do it as often as I can. But truly to me, I am a believer that a higher power does exist and I like to have faith in that,” Priyanka told to Oprah.

Later during the one-on-one session Oprah also asked Priyanka Chopra whether her faith has been tested ever or not. It was one of the most intimate moment that the actress shared with the host. “I think around the death of my dad,” Chopra answered. “At that time, [my faith] was tested… I flew my dad to Singapore, New York, Europe, India, everywhere just to do whatever I could to prolong his life. It’s such a helpless feeling.” Chopra also revealed, “I was very angry, my relationship with God changed a little bit… but then at the same time, I feel like God helped me find salvation and come out of it too.”

When asked about her 2000 Miss World win, the actress told that she was overwhelmed by it. As a 17-year-old, all she was trying to do was “to keep her head above the water.”

“I was thrown into the deep, and so badly. I didn’t come from a pageant family. I didn’t come from desiring that. I never thought I could be part of it. At 17, when you’re thrown into this crazy world of pageants internationally and movies, I was just trying to keep my head above water at that point,” she continued.

Priyanka had been the victim of racism and bullying in her teenage days, which affected her. She used to live in the US with her relatives and that part of her life “really broke her spirit.” But after her Miss World win nothing else mattered as she knew that this was the start of a new life. “High school is hard anyway. And to become of age, to understand your body as a woman, to be devalued for something I can’t change, I was profoundly affected by it,” she admitted.

Chopra also described a disturbing experience from the entertainment industry. She confessed that once a director had asked her to do a dance performance which made her uncomfortable. However, the actress still regrets not standing up against it as she didn’t want to be out of the system. “I was so scared. I was new in the entertainment business and girls are always told that ‘you don’t want to get a reputation of being hard to work with.’ So I worked within the system.”

Talking about her dreamy marriage with Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra told Oprah that it was her mom who “manifested” him. She also told that initially she didn’t even pay much attention to him due to their age gap.

“Nothing surprised me more than him. He’s such a self-assured man. So sensible. So excited about my achievements. My dreams. [It’s] such a true partnership that he offers me in everything that we do together.” She also told that Nick clears her checklist of the future husband and hence she feels really happy to be a part of his life.

Chopra thanks her parents for everything

In the end, Priyanka Chopra thanked her parents to have filled her with a sense of individuality that still keeps her going. She also told that her parents shared an equal – balanced partnership, and never argued in front of her and her brother. She also wished that every parent should inculcate the same in their children.
