Rachel Brosnahan became a household name with her role as Midge in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And she herself is quite marvelous! In a lively chat with Deadline, Rachel opened up about the show, her future project, the Emmys and more.
Here are some tidbits from the conversation!
Rachel Brosnahan on The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
Talking about the “dazzling” first episode of season three, Rachel Brosnahan said it all feels surreal now. “It feels special, especially now given that we could never be in a with a thousand people at a time like that, it feels like a fever dream. Never in film and television, in my 12-13 years doing this, have I ever experienced that kind of energy in a space. And you can feel it through the camera.”
When asked if she had any fears or trepidation before starting her journey on Marvelous Mrs Maisel, the actress said she was “petrified.” She had never done comedy before and it wasn’t a cakewalk.
“It felt like the biggest mountain to summit. It was a world that I was completely unfamiliar with,” she said. “I continue to be more afraid with each progressing season as Midge is supposed to become a more and more successful stand-up.”
On co-star Luke Kirby
Rachel Brosnahan was all praise for co-star Luke Kirby who plays Lenny Bruce on The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
“Whenever he’s on screen, he changes the pace of the show,” she said. She further called him charming and gave him all the credit for why people root for Midge and Lenny’s relationship.
But completely supporting her character Midge’s choices, she said that “it’s okay for Midge to be alone and to be in a relationship with her career.”
On her first break – The Unborn
Rachel certainly rose to fame as Mrs Maisel, but not many know that she made her debut with the horror film The Unborn. She said she was “amazed” at how she landed the role but it was an exciting experience nonetheless.
Recalling what prompted her to choose a career in the movies, she said that for her, acting was somewhere between a dream and a hobby, and she wanted to turn it into something more.
But there’s always the hustle. Rachel Brosnahan didn’t have it easy either, with comments like “you’re too short”, “you’re too young” bogging her down. “It was overwhelming but I caught the bug for sure,” she concluded.
On her upcoming movie – I’m Your Woman
Speaking for the first time about her upcoming film on Amazon Prime, she said that it was a tough but an incredible experience.
I’m Your Woman sees Rachel Brosnahan as Jean, a mum-on-the-go. She revealed that the movie is about a woman “who for a number of reasons doesn’t feel immediately connected to her child” and explores their relationship.
On her choice of roles
“I’ve never really played myself, and I’m always in search of things that feel out of reach,” Brosnahan said.
“Jean couldn’t feel more polarly opposite from Mrs Maisel. That was an exciting change of gears especially since they were shot actually very close together.”
On the virtual 2020 Emmys
The Emmy Award winner disclosed her plans to attend the 2020 Emmys from the comfort of her home.
“I am thrilled. Thrilled that I get to maybe wear pyjamas on the bottom,” she quipped. “But it will be sad to not be able to be in the same space with so many of the nominees. Just the energy of being able to celebrate with other performers, designers and people you admire. But it’ll me more comfortable than any award show that has ever happened.”
Rachel’s nomination for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series this year marks her third Emmy nomination in the category. Marvelous Mrs Maisel itself was on a roll, bagging 20 nominations.
