My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is back with its third season and one of the most interesting guests David Letterman had this time was Robert Downey Jr.
The episode got off to a good start, with the two gentlemen playfully poking fun at each other. “Mr Box Office”, as Letterman called Downey Jr, made quite a few revelations during the conversation. Here are a few snippets!
How Robert Downey Jr alters scripts, majorly
Rumour has it that the actor alters scripts “to the point of just moving the plot” and Letterman decided to address the issue once and for all.
As it turns out, the speculation is quite true and RDJ does alter the script “when he can”. Need a case in point? He actually digressed from the script of the first Iron Man movie in the final scene! Yes, the movie wasn’t supposed to end with him revealing his real identity at the press conference.
Coming from a family of writers, he told Letterman, is what prompts him to improvise every now and then.
On his past struggles with addiction
The Avengers star recalled the one time when he worked under the influence. “There was a single crossover, and I call it the most relaxed performance in the history of cinema,” he said, referring to the Jodie Foster directorial Home for the Holidays.
Almost everyone knows that Robert Downey Jr once struggled with addiction. But what came as a shock to him as well as the audience was how David Letterman too battled with alcohol addiction.
“But I’m so grateful not to have that as a control of me. For better or for worse,” the host shared as he concluded this segment.
How the Iron Man helmet blinded him
The first film in the Iron Man franchise came out in 2008 and CGI technology probably wasn’t as advanced back then. Everything was real and Robert Downey Jr had to wear the suit and the helmet for his scenes. Here’s what it felt like:
“So I put this helmet on, and it slammed closed, and I couldn’t see anything. And then these LED lights went on and it was like The Manchurian Candidate… I was absolutely blinded.”
No more MCU films?
It seems like the MCU chapter of RDJ’s life has closed. “I feel I’m done with it,” the star said when asked if he’d be doing any more Marvel films.
Although he didn’t reveal what kind of projects he’ll do next, he said that the bottom line for him is that it “better be great”. Well, if it has Robert Downey Jr’s name attached to it, we’re sure it’ll be better than great.
