Ryan Gosling turns 39 years old today, but he doesn’t look a day older than 29! The ‘Notebook’ star has had a loyal fan base since 2001 when he enthralled us with his intense acting in indie drama, The Believer. On Ryan Gosling’s 39th birthday, here, we look at some of the stories that are lesser-known about the actor!
He was energetic to a fault as a child
Not his fault though! An inquisitive child since the very beginning, Ryan saw ups and downs early in his life. He grew up in an unconventional environment since his family was Mormon. Religion was always a big influence on his life. His father’s profession as a travelling salesman meant the family had to move around a lot. Both of these combined to make it difficult for young Ryan to find his place in the world. Just by the way, Ryan Gosling did not identify with his family’s religious values.
He carried the artist within, since a young age
Gosling was seen on-screen in 1993 for the first time. An open audition at the age of 12 gave Ryan, according to him, “the best two years of his life.” Cast as one of the Mouseketeers in the revival of Disney Channel’s ‘The Mickey Mouse Club’, he was always seen as the less talented of the three kids. But that didn’t seem to bother this Golden Globe Winner. Being on stage or on screen helped Ryan gain the self-confidence which he needed to find himself as a person. So, it was clear from a very early age that he was going to be an artist. Ryan struggled with deciding what to choose. Believe us, he even took up Ballet at a point!
As much as he’s popular amongst women, they’ve always been an influence on him
Ryan Gosling’s parents got a divorce when he was just 13 years of age. So, he was left without a male figure to learn from, living with his mother and elder sister. Which kind of worked out in his favour, since he grew up to be a compassionate and socially conscious individual. He regards his years with these two women as “the years he learned to think like a woman.”
He once tried to draw ‘first blood’ as a child
Not something to laugh at necessarily, the two-time Oscar Nominee has a very weird incident in his childhood. Being influenced by the action hit “First Blood”, young Ryan took steak knives to his school and unloaded them on his fellow students! Naturally, it got him suspended from school and he was home-schooled for a year. Which he claims gave him an ‘autonomy he didn’t really ever lose’.
He had to develop his accent
Except for his conventionally charming looks, nothing about this man is conventional. Especially that accent. Coming from a French-Canadian descent on both sides of his families, Ryan also had the ancestry of German, English, Scottish and Irish descent. Growing up, his family moved around a lot which gave him the exposure to different dialects and accents. He finally gave up the Canadian accent because it wasn’t “tough enough” and started to speak like Marlon Brando.
Ryan Gosling, all in all, has had a crazy ride all his life. And amidst all of this chaos, he has grown up to be an excellent human being, a dedicated philanthropist and a doting family man. It is to his credit that he is the way he is. And on his birthday, wehope and pray that he keeps exceeding his own benchmarks.
Happy birthday, Ryan Gosling!
