Ahead of her debut film Dil Bechara‘s release, Sanjana Sanghi opened up about her relationship with late actor and co-star Sushant Singh Rajput. From #MeToo allegations to Rajput’s alleged depression, the actress broke her silence on everything in a candid conversation with Pinkvilla.
Sanjana Sanghi and Sushant Singh Rajput shared a close bond
Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi instantly clicked on the sets of Dil Bechara. They found common ground in studies, food, cinema and what not. They were inseparable, as the actress said, and people had to practically break them apart on sets.
“It used to be like, okay can we now start? Can we get on to work?” Sanjana quipped. “For me, Sushant was the person who understood me at every level. And I understood him.”
Sushant made Sanjana Sanghi’s debut easier for her
Sushant made the process of Sanjana Sanghi’s first film easier and comfortable for her. Dil Bechara doesn’t revolve around Sushant’s character, it is about Kizzie (played by Sanghi) and Sushant accepted this fact with utmost humility.
“I didn’t even have to say it and he would see me prepping in the corner, send his spot boy, be like “give her a cappuccino”…. I just got used to these things, because for me, that was our thing,” Sanghi recalled.
On Sushant Singh Rajput’s mental health
When asked if she felt something was amiss about Sushant while they were working together, Sanjana Sanghi rightly said that the only Sushant she knew was the one she met on the sets of Dil Bechara. Not having met him or known him before, she couldn’t have possibly sensed if something was different about him.
That said, the actress added that Sushant was always present, giving and supportive. “You’ve seen the trailer. You can tell that that’s not an actor whose mind is elsewhere. He’s all there,” she said.
Addressing the #MeToo allegations against Sushant
Back in 2018, there were reports claiming that Sanjana Sanghi was sexually harassed by her co-star Sushant. Both of them denied the allegations, with Sushant sharing screenshots of his chats with her, but they still couldn’t put the rumours to rest.
Calling those claims “baseless” and no truth, Sanjana Sanghi discussed why she took time to come out and speak her truth.
“They see it as time, but the truth is they don’t know our reality. If they are waiting for lies to be clarified, I don’t want to perpetuate that culture.”
“I don’t want to be in a place where every rumour that is written about me, I have to come out with my trusted colleagues to clarify them time and again. I shouldn’t have needed to clarify anything in the first place is the point. Because nothing happened,” the 23-year-old said.
“He was the greatest co-star I could have had and I have every ounce of love and respect for him, as he did for me.”
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police recently interrogated Sushant’s psychiatrist Dr. Kersi Chavda. More than 35 statements, including Sanjana Sanghi’s, have been recorded so far.
