Johnny Depp is suing the newspaper “The Sun”, its publishers, News Group Newspapers (NGN) and it’s executive editor, Dan Wootten for an article published in 2018, “Potty – How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?” for referring to him as a ‘wife beater’. The newspaper is said to support and defend their claim with allegations of domestic abuse made by ex-wife Amber from 2013-2016.
“This is a critical case for Depp as his entire career is at risk, as well as his personal reputation and standing among his adoring fans across the globe.” Said Emily Cox an expert in defamation cases “The stakes for Depp are high: Hollywood has ignored and sanctioned some despicable behaviour by celebrities in the past, but a new wind is blowing through Tinseltown as well as society as a whole. It is likely to be crucial for Depp that he clears his name.”
While the ‘Aquaman’ actress isn’t on trial, the three-week trial is said to be a showdown between the former spouses who have over the years accused each other of violence and abuse. It is spread over several courts in the UK to respect social distancing norms and began on Tuesday with Johnny Depp in the witness stand denying all claims made by Heard.
“I am now convinced that she came into my life to take from me anything worth taking and then destroy what remained of it.” Said the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor who is suing Amber Heard in another libel case in the US. With the trial against The Sun hinging on finding the aggressor of their long toxic relationship, various incidents were brought to light in the courtroom.
Calling her allegations “sick and completely untrue” the 57-year-old actor took a shot at Heard calling her a “calculating, narcissistic sociopath”. He also revealed, in a shocking statement at the high court, that his final decision to divorce the model was after she defecated in their shared bed calling it a “Harmless prank”
The Sun’s lawyers and Amber Heard’s lawyers have painted Depp as a drunk and drug addict who constantly abused the model. In his defense, the ‘Edward Scissorhands’ actor revealed his side of alleged acts, claiming Heard had used violence against him and abused him.
Adding incidents where Amber Heard allegedly severed his finger after throwing a bottle of vodka and repeatedly punched him in a flight, Johnny Depp denied having ‘ever’ hit her. ‘It is a strong and central part of my moral code that I would never strike a woman, under any circumstances, at any time. I find it simply inconceivable and it would never happen.”. Depp’s witnesses include former partners, Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder
