Did you know Tom Hanks paid for one of the most iconic scenes of ‘Forrest Gump’?
The iconic “run across America” would never have been a part of the movie if Tom Hanks didn’t pay for it. In a recent interview with “In Depth With Graham Bensinger,” Tom Hanks revealed that he paid for the most popular “running scene” in the 1994 Oscar-winning movie ‘Forrest Gump’ as the producers were running low on budget.
Tom Hanks reminisces his conversation with the production house. He said, ” The studio said, ‘We can’t afford it; you’re not going to do it.” Then Bob (the director of the movie) told production, “It’s too important a part of the movie just to cut. We can make this work.” And they replied, “No, you can’t.”
The director Zemeckis who understood the potential of the scene convinced Tom Hanks to pitch in some money to make the scene work. He said, “Well, this run is going to cost X amount of dollars.” And it wasn’t cheap. And I said, ‘OK’. He said, ‘You and I are going to split that amount, and we’re going to give it back [to Paramount].
Then they went to the production house and told them, “We’ll give you the money back, but you guys [Paramount] are going to share the profits a little bit more.” They readily agreed to the offer and said, ‘Fabulous, great. OK. And it was good for us, too.”
Tom Hanks also revealed that they paid for covering the weather insurance on ‘Forrest Gump’
Tom Hanks not only paid for one of the most iconic scenes in the movie history but also paid for covering weather insurance. He recalls the conversation he had with the producers. “They said, ‘The weather is such that we can’t get the insurance coverage on it so you guys can’t shoot.’
Then once again he and the director decided to pitch in some more money and the rest is history. The movie made about $330.5 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide. Tom Hanks alone made $65 million which is much more than the budget of the classic movie.
The movie not only earned a fortune but also took home many awards including six Oscars. Tom Hanks took home the best actor while Zemeckis won the best director. The movie also won the best picture award at the Oscars.
