It’s been three decades since The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first aired and the cast, including Will Smith, are planning something special for fans!
Smith, 51, took to Instagram to post a group shot of the cast. “Today is exactly 30 YEARS since The @FreshPrince of Bel-Air debuted! So we’re doin’ something for y’all… a for real Banks Family Reunion is comin’ soon to @HBOmax,” he wrote in the caption.
In the group photo, Will Smith posed alongside co-stars Alfonso Ribeiro, Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Late actor James Avery, who played Philip Banks in the series, died in 2013 aged 68. Smith made sure to remember the actor in his post, writing “RIP James” in the end.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air had a successful six-season run and aired from 1990 to 1996. In the American sitcom, Will Smith played a fictionalized version of himself, a teenager who is sent to stay with his wealthy aunt and uncle after he causes trouble at home.
In the Instagram slideshow, Smith also shared a snapshot with Janet Hubert, who played Aunt Viv on the show, until Daphne Maxwell Reid took over. Janet was reportedly replaced after a fall out with Smith and the other producers.
Will Smith and Janet Hubert end their 27-year feud
Also a part of the HBO special will be Will Smith and Janet Hubert’s heart-to-heart. The two sat down for an “emotional reunion and a candid conversation.” We’ll see them talking about their past problems, HBO Max said, as they spoke after more than 25 years.
Hubert has targeted the show and Will Smith several times in the past. In 2011, she was sure “there will never be a reunion”. She even went on to call Smith an “egomaniac”, blaming him for why she was taken off the show. Smith too fired back, saying Hubert wanted the show to be “The Aunt Viv of Bel-Air.”
The streaming service added that the show will be “funny and heartfelt night full of music, dancing, and more special surprise guests”. Marcus Raboy will direct the televised event, which is scheduled to air later this autumn.
