Zendaya Wins SeeHer Award At Critics’ Choice Awards: “This Is Very, Very Special”

Zendaya won the honour for accurately portraying women in media.

Zendaya was honoured with the SeeHer award at Critics’ Choice Awards 2021 on Sunday night. She is the youngest star to receive the special honour.

The award recognizes women who embody the essence of the SeeHer movement, which advocates for authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape.

Stars who have previously been bestowed the honour are Kristen Bell, Viola Davis, Claire Foy, and Gal Gadot.

Zendaya was presented the SeeHer award by her Malcolm & Marie costar John David Washington. The Euphoria actress gave a touching acceptance speech. “Thank you so much to John David Washington. I’m Incredibly lucky to have you as a friend and also as a scene partner,” she began. “This means so much to me.”

She went on to say that all she could think of at the moment was “gratitude”. “This word just keeps coming to my mind. Especially with the year everyone has had,” she said. “To continue to be grateful for every single moment, big and small. To be grateful for the people in our world and in our life that make the work we do possible.”

“Make sure we hold onto our loved ones a little bit tighter. Make sure we call them, acknowledge them, tell them we love them. And take in moments like this.”

Zendaya concluded her speech expressing how special this moment is for her.

SeeHer president Nadine Karp McHugh heaped praises on Zendaya as she shared why the actress was the perfect recipient for the award this year.

“We are so proud to be a part of the Critics’ Choice Awards, and celebrating our fifth SeeHer Award,” said Karp McHugh. “We are delighted to be presenting the award to Zendaya, who is such a strong representation of what it means to be a woman in 2021…”

“She is a role model and leading voice of her generation. From being the youngest actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series to using her platform to advocate for Black women in Hollywood, she is showing the next generation that you are never too young to use your voice to make a difference.”

“Inspiring girls everywhere to see themselves in their full potential, Zendaya represents everything SeeHer is,” she added.

For the Critics’ Choice Awards, Zendaya wore a stunning ensemble comprising of an ivory silk crêpe top and a fluorescent orange skirt.

The star switched into another outfit for accepting the SeeHer award. For her second look, she wore a black sequinned gown, styling it with diamond earrings. Both her outfits were from Valentino.

Zendaya was also nominated for the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress for Malcolm & Marie. However, she lost to Promising Young Woman‘s Carey Mulligan.
