Chris Martin & Selena Gomez Get Emotional In New Music Video ‘Let Somebody Go’

The heart-wrenching music video is directed by Dave Meyers.

Chris Martin and Selena Gomez just released a trippy new music video for their new breakup track “Let Somebody Go”. The singers are belting out emotional lyrics in the monochromatic video, continuously reaching out for one another as they’re pulled apart in New York City.

Selena Gomez shared a behind-the-scenes photo on Twitter to mark the vid’s release:

The breakup song was co-written by Martin’s 17-year-old daughter Apple, with lyrics including, “You gave everything this golden glow/Now turn off all the stars, ’cause this I know/That it hurts like so, to let somebody go.”

The video captured in black and white opens with Martin, 44, and Gomez, 29, in an emotional hug before he sings, “We had that kind of love / I thought that it would never end.”

Both stars go into emotional solitude, trying to reach for each other but can’t seem to meet. They climb a never-ending staircase before the ground collapses beneath them. The two then grab onto each other as they fall and eventually break their grips from each other and get pulled in opposite directions as they “let go.” The video ends by going back to the beginning shot of their emotional embrace.

The music video, directed by Dave Meyers follows Coldplay‘s frontman Chris Martin and the “Wolves” singer as they individually deal with the pain of letting a loved one go.

Chris Martin previously told Apple Music of the song, “It’s just a really lovely ballad. And quite early on we realised it needed a female counterpart to the vocal. And we were very grateful that when we asked Selena to sing on it, she loved the song and was happy to do so. Collaborations in general are something that we’ve done more of recently. We never really used to do it before. When we were younger, we kind of locked ourselves in a room and felt we had to prove everything ourselves. But I think as time has gone on, it’s become more interesting for us to work with other people from different parts of the world, different genres. It just adds colour and character to the music.”

Selena Gomez and Chris Martin performed the track live for the first time on The Late Late Show with James Corden last October.

“Let Somebody Go” is taken off Coldplay’s latest album Music of the Spheres, which was released on Oct. 15, 2021.
