Emmy Rossum, the 35-year-old “Shameless” star recently revealed her look for “Angelyne” and she looks almost unrecognizable. She is set to play the role of the eponymous billboard queen in the upcoming series of the same name.
“I found it to be completely liberating to look in the mirror and not see myself at all,” said the Golden Globe nominee in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “At first, it’s unnerving. But feeling lost gives way to this real liberation — from myself and the hang-ups that can impede a performance,” she added.
A little bit on how Emmy Rossum turned herself into Angelyne
According to the actress, she spent nearly four to five hours on the make-up chair each morning to prep for the look. As difficult of a transformation as it was, the make-up team for the series made it happen. Other than sporting the platinum blonde wig, she claimed to have suffered blisters from wearing the three-pound breastplate that was adhered to her torso. She also suffered tear duct problems from wearing two sets of contact lenses, as well as heavy eye makeup.
“The physicality of the character was challenging. The body is heavy, yet it has to feel light and effervescent,” she explained. “But I just kept focusing on how lucky I felt. This opportunity is really every actor’s dream. You raise your hand and you say, ‘Hey, I’d like to play this, and this is how I envision the story,'” she added.
She is just as iconic as the real media personality!
Emmy Rossum also revealed how she underwent the Angelyne transformation previously for a meeting with the executives at Universal Studios. And she did it with style. She crashed her own appointment after cancelling it previously, with an extremely convincing performance that left people wondering whether she was the real deal.
“As my acting coach likes to tell me, intensity is not something I struggle with. I wanted to give them the experience,” she commented.
Even her husband couldn’t recognize her
Emmy Rossum’s husband, Sam Esmail, executive produces Angelyne. Even he admitted that his wife was barely recognizable in the music icon’s getup. “When I say that there are times where I did not recognize her because she was lost in this person, I really mean it,” said Esmail of his wife. “This is my wife I’m talking about. It’s kind of eerie,” he added. The “Day After Tomorrow” actress also executive produces the series alongside her husband.
It premieres on Peacock TV on May 19!
