As the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial is underway, bringing new twists and turns to the case, the high-profile defamation trial has divided social media into two parts, and netizens’ reactions are proof of it. A video is doing rounds on social media which sees Depp’s fans greeting him with gifts outside the courtroom.
In a viral video, Johnny Depp was seen receiving gifts and cards from his fans who were waiting outside the Virginia courthouse, where the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is fighting a legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp could be seen waving at his fans from inside his car and a fan even gifted Depp a briefcase, while others held his hands and posed for selfies.
JessVal Ortiz, a social media influencer, posted an Instagram Reel showing what happens when you live “20 minutes away from the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial.” She showed how she got to the courthouse and waited for Johnny with other fans outside.
When Johnny’s car exits, the video shows him rolling down his window to wave to the cheering fans. Fans then swarm the vehicle, showering the actor with gifts, cards, and flowers. She says in the video, “I can’t believe he’s allowed to receive all these gifts.”
JessVal captioned the post, “That. Was. Wild.” Many commented on how amazing the entire sequence was. One fan commented, “I loved every second of this video.” One fan noted how someone threw an entire briefcase at Johnny. “The whole briefcase Johnny was given,” read a comment. Some were jealous that JessVal managed to get so close to Johnny. One fan commented, “You are so lucky you met Johnny Depp.” Many even pointed out the contrast between the reception Johnny and Amber got at the gate. In the video, when Amber’s car passes, no fan gathered around.
Johnny has filed a defamation suit against Amber, alleging that an article she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018 harmed his career. Amber mentioned being a domestic abuse survivor in the article, but she didn’t mention Johnny.
The trial has been broadcast live every day from Monday to Thursday, but as of May 5, it will take a week off. Judge Penney Azcarate adjourned the court until May 16. It will resume at 9 a.m. ET on May 16 and run until May 27, when both sides’ closing arguments will be heard.
Judge Azcarate reminded the jury on Thursday not to read, watch, or listen to anything related to the case during the recess.
This includes avoiding television, the news, and social media, all of which have influenced public perception of the trial thus far.
In addition, a petition on Change.org to bring Johnny Depp back to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise is receiving renewed attention and thousands of signatures amid his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Titled “Justice for Johnny Depp,” the petition currently has more than 475,000 signatures. The organizer of the petition, Kimberly Giles, addressed Disney in the petition, saying that “Amber Heard ruined Johnny Depp’s life as well as career.” Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate who serves as the main protagonist of the franchise.
“Johnny Depp deserves his life back the way it was before Amber Heard came along, because no actor or actress could ever say this man is not an amazing actor,” the petition reads. “If you were falsely accused of something you did not do, then there’s proof you didn’t do it and you still were treated like a bad person, wouldn’t you want Justice??”
Giles continued: “Johnny Depp deserves to continue his roll [sic] as Sparrow. I believe that removing him was a mistake on your end but quite stupid if you ask me … Please have a change of heart and do not release that movie without Johnny Depp.” Updates from Giles and comments on the page date back two years. Another petition demanding the actor return to the franchise has over 778,000 signatures as of Saturday
